Is this mod possible?
on: July 07, 2010, 08:38:53 AM
I have not yet modded a SAK.  I'm hoping that those who have modded can answer this question:

How possible would it be to make a 91mm 2-layer knife that simply has 2 large blades and 2 small blades?  So that the blades are easy to access, I'd like the blades to have the same configuration on each side of the knife -- that is, each end would have a large blade and a small blade on it.

You could do that on a 93mm frame as its symmetrical but not on a 91mm frame.  When adding additional blade layers to a 91mm or 84mm frame you do have problems with accessing the nail nicks and do have to add additional ones yourself.

Hopefully Spork will be along soon and show you how he does it on his whittling mods.
I'm not taking any more mod orders at present, sorry.

The 84mm and 91mm are "sleeveboard" pattern knives. Because they are not symmetrical it would not be possible merely to reverse the parts...also there are the spine tools to consider.

I think I was able to put a reversed main blade on an 84mm using a scissors spring, but never pinned it together...84mm scissors springs are pretty scarce anyway.

Neil is correct, the "equal-end cigar" pattern of the 93mm would be the platform to start with. I believe someone built a "Moose" using two Solos over at the SOSAK. There is the option of pruner and electrician blades or awl in lieu of one of the pen blades...

Hopefully!  I'm actually trying to design the perfect whittling knife for me.

That's too bad about having to use the 93mm ones -- those knives are much harder to find used (and thus affordable).

The single layer Alox knives are usually in the $20 range new.

What is interchangeable between the 91 and 93 mm knives?

Hmm..  OK.

You know, the more I think about this, the more I realize that what I really want is a knife with one large blade and three small blades...
