Crazy guy at gas station with tazer
on: July 28, 2010, 02:31:46 PM
So last night during our 1 am lunch break i went to get gas as my jeep was sucking vapors. I was trying to pump gas as fast as possible because Houston in the middle of the night is a scary place. As always some weird guy pulls up beside me trying to sell me some questionable crap out of his car. I tell him politely but firmly " no thanks"...apparently he didn't like this answer. He then tells me i also have this...a stun gun which he proceeds to fire it up in all of its blue arcing glory. He then gets out of his car coming over to give me a closer (?) look at it. I flicked open my surge and told him some choice words and to back the f off.  I think i scared the holy hell out of him with the quick deployment on a blade but i didn't want him anywhere near me..especially with a tazer.  :twak:

seriously..another few steps and i would have carved me another wallet out of his ass >:D

i need to renew my cc. :-\

Yes, you certainly do.  These type of crazies are the reason I carry most of the time, and I don't live in a place nearly as scary as Houston at 1 am.

It sounds like you handled the situation well, though!  :tu:

Sounds like he wanted get close to rob you.  That was a scary moment.. glad to hear you scared him off without incident.  With crazy people, you never know what they might do.
This is called a Swiss Army Knife. Do you know what Switzerland is? Switzerland is a place where they don't like to fight, so they get people to do their fighting for them while they ski and eat chocolate. - Larry David

I'd have pointed the gas nozzle at him- those arcs would set off a nice blaze!

Fire off a couple of quick squirts in his general direction and smile!   >:D

I'd have pointed the gas nozzle at him-
That's pretty much my plan if I'm ever bothered while pumping gas. I always have a lighter too. Glad you got away.

While true, a good OHO is ultimately cheaper per unit cost of utility than gasoline is; gas is expensive on it's own. ;)  (Yes, I'm being pedantic.  I'm glad you're safe, Pacu; strange, strange situation.)

Tough guy action--B!tch slap him with the gas pump across the teeth then proceed to give him a gas line catheter irrigating his bladder with high octane while making him drink squeege juice.

Cowardly yet safe action--scream like a little girl yelling.."that's my purse--i don't know you" and kicking him in the boys >:D

Yes, but he has a chance of winning if he challenges you with a blade.  It's more or less a fair fight.  Squirting gasoline from a few feet away and potentially setting him on fire appeals to a much baser instinct, and is kind of like instant proof that he is dealing with someone he simply does not want to screw with.

There are certain things that affect people in ways they can't even fathom, and the potential for being burned alive is a big one.  Another one is dogs.  Ask any canine officer and they'll tell you that while folks may challenge an officer with a gun, they rarely challenge an officer with a dog.  Large predatory animals rank up there with fire as things we are genetically programmed to avoid.

Plus, the willingness of someone to actually set you on fire says that whether or not he succeeds in setting you ablaze or not, proves that this person is not going to take it easy on you.

And, maybe the jackass would avoid harassing people at gas stations in the future, remembering how close he came to being the Special Of The Day at the BBQ Hut.

Lastly, gasoline is very much legal, while cutting someone to pieces with a multitool is a bit of a grey area.  You are carrying a knife, maybe you were looking for trouble.  In this instance, the gasoline is a weapon of opportunity, and I'd defy any lawyer to try and disprove that.

You'd only need a little gas. Even at $10 a gallon I doubt you'd need to use more than a dollars worth. Plus, as Def touched on. The closer the bad guy gets to you, the more chance you give him.

Actually, no, I was just thinking about how expensive gasoline is and that it would be an expensive use of it for self defense... I don't like the fumes, either. :/ XD

It's the voice of experience talking, which is the result of being in too many situations like that that went horribly wrong, and having the scars to prove it.

Take for example the time I was working in a pizza joint, in the back making pizzas when the girl up front got robbed.  I ran out after the jackass, but didn't have the sense to think that he had a friend waiting outside, and I lost a kneecap.

Or the time I thought I was a way cool martial artist and redirected the knife away from my stomach and firmly into my thigh.  If I'd had the sense, I would have dodged rather than trying a really sweet looking redirect, and I would have kept all my bodily fluids safe inside.

Even when you are in the right, using a knife for self defense is a bad move.  It's messy, and the connotation associated with knives and the wounds they leave is just the kind of thing an attorney would exploit.  After all, why were you out at night, in that neighborhood with a knife?  You must have been doing something you shouldn't have, like looking for trouble.  It's even worse if you are young or look young.  If you ever need to use a knife as a weapon, leave the blade folded and use it as a fist load or kubaton.  If you use the blade and win the fight, you will probably lose in court.

And, appealing to basic human instinct like the fear of burning is a great way to win the fight before it begins, and that's really the only way to win, especially when there are weapons involved.  Rule #1 of a knife fight is to prepare to be cut.  Try taking blades on the outside of your forearms as there's less to damage there, and the bones should protect anything really important.  Great rule, but if you can end a fight before losing control of your fingers, so much the better.  The nice thing about these base instincts is they tend to even work on crackheads- they are willing to be shot, stabbed or beaten to get what they want, but a little fire will get even them more often than not.  And, if the jackass in question has a few friends around waiting to get you from behind, you think they are going to get closer and take a chance on being burnt, especially if you squirt gas on their friend as calmly as you are putting it in your tank.

This sounds corny, but I strongly suggest you read Sun Tzu's Art Of War.  Read it numerous times if you have to, but make certain you understand all the concepts you can, and adapt as much as possible to your personal life.  Most importantly, learn from the mistakes of others, because life is too short to make them all yourself.

Sometimes any kind of weapon and a firm and mean resolute would scare most of the crazies out there...... But a good 1911 is better  :)
Glad you got out of the situation fine  :tu:
