Finally nabbed one of these knives.
on: July 12, 2010, 06:30:56 AM
Been awhile looking for one of these.  I grabbed one on ebay from a
city a few hours north of me if you can believe it.  :)  I think a fairly
good "buy it now."

Thanks for sharing the pictures with us  :salute:
If you think its 70 or 80 years old and its still in this amazing condition  :o

I have a few old knives and you could say at the very best they have had a bit of use,
And one I picked up at the weekend is covered with concrete I think
Everything’s adjustable

That "black ebonized material" would be bakelite wouldn't it?

Thanks all for the comments.  I'm not sure exactly if it is Bakelite Dave.  I haven't it in hand
yet but it's in the mail, so when I get it I'll take a look. :)

It looks to be a BAK and they had bakelite scales I read somewhere - and yours looks exactly like mine!

Mine is a 1950's model though, yours is much earlier - I'm not sure when bakelite appeared tbh

EDIT: from Wikipedia:

Quote
Bakelite (pronounced /ˈbeɪkɨlaɪt/), or polyoxybenzylmethylenglycolanhydride, is an early plastic. It is a thermosetting phenol formaldehyde resin, formed from an elimination reaction of phenol with formaldehyde, usually with a wood flour filler. It was developed in 1907–1909 by Belgian chemist Dr. Leo Baekeland.

So it could be!

Dave just received it and yes it appears to be bakelite.  What can you tell me about it?
It might not be as old as I thought.  It actually might still be in production who know.  :)

Oh it could easily be as old as 1930s, bakelite was around 20 years by then according to that wiki article!

All I know about bakelite was they used to make everything out of it before modern plastics were invented! telephones, radios, tvs - all sorts!

Dave,  thanks for the info.  I did post the pic's on your British Blade forums where I discovered
they have a thread pertaining to some old Military folders.  Here is the link...

May I ask...what is the marlin spike for?  All I could think of is once you pull the marlin on the boat, you spike it in the head to end the fight??

The Marlin spike is used to loosen knots.  You force the tip into the knot, push, and twist.
It works quite well I've used them often years ago on believe it or knot on kids shoes laces.  ;)
