Not a bad day today
on: August 04, 2010, 12:38:35 AM
I got a little stir crazy this morning and needed to get out of the house.  Being a bit broke right now, I was somewhat limited in the things I could do, and since the Jeep is in the shop this week, that limited me a bit more.  Still, there had to be something I needed to do, and it hit me.

Last year my Tilley started showing it's age and so I ordered a new one.  It actually took a couple of months to come into the store (or at least it took them a couple of months to let me know it was in!) and I just never managed to go over and pick it up.  So I figured today would be the day.  Luckily, the store still had it in the back waiting for me, but they also told me they were getting out of the Tilley business, so I am going to have to find another Tilley Hookup, or get a backup!

After that I decided to check out the local outfitters, Mountain Equipment Co-op, to see if I could get a new Rite In the Rain notebook for work since the one I had is full.  It didn't take long to find the notebooks, and I looked at some other stuff too, not really seeing anything in particular that jumped out and grabbed me, which was good as I've not really got any spare money to throw around at the moment!

Then, while making my way to the cash, I have to walk through what I call "The Gauntlet" which is a small aisle with SAKs, multitools, knives, carabiners and all manner of other goodies.  The first one to catch my eye was a Gerber Curve, and I figured what the heck- $12 wouldn't kill me, so I grabbed it.

Then I saw the PS4, and since I don't have any of the new Squirts, I had to grab it as well, adding another $30 on.

So, in all, my "cheap" day cost me about $60-70 (by the time I paid for parking and had lunch with my wife) but I came home with two new multitools and a new Tilley hat!

+ 10 on the small side. When I got mine, I was a bit taken aback at just how small it was after perusing on line photos of it.
A little Leatherman information.

Saw it at MEC a couple of months back - that thing is the size of my thumb.  I ended up with a clutch instead.

(If you'd have skipped lunch with your wife, you could have bought another multitool)
In order to be certain of having the right tool for every job.........one must first acquire a lot of tools

Look, if he doesn't treat the wife right, she leaves and takes half the multitools.  Forward planning, chap, forward planning.

Apparently that box full of Multitool.org caps hasn't arrived yet, unless you've figured out how to wear one of those and a Tilley at the same time.

*For those who might not know, Official Multitool.org caps are on sale in the MTO Store at EDCSource.com.  Please go have a look.

Tine is good. Unfortunately I don't quite agree with some of the tools they put on small tools - in particular the LMs with scissors instead of pliers, and the classic vic SAKs that have ridiculously small scissors and a nail file. Blade, phillips head and flat head is the perfect setup on a tool for me, add the Skeletool look and I'm all set.

The Vic Rally is the same size as the Classic but exchanges the scissors for a phillips.  You could look at that.

The vic classic scissors are small but perfectly functional, I lived with one for years before I was into SAK and MT.

Awesome! Looks nice. If only there was an alox version

I know many people like the scissors but I never got the point. Normally, I can use a blade for all the things that I can use MT scissors for. If I do need scissors, chances are the MT sized ones won't do. It's also the most breakable thing on a MT.

Well, I have worn one almost every day for the last ten years, I've worn two out and had them both replaced under warranty.  That should tell you something!  :D

Seriously, they are extremely comfortable, virtually indestructible (and no matter how you destroy it, it will be replaced) and have a lot of bonus features to them like a padded top, chin strap for windy days, interior pocket and a small strap inside for holding sunglasses, well, you'd be hard pressed to find a better hat.

I used to wear an Akubra Tracker, which I see is now discontinued.

http://www.akubra.com.au/

It was a nice hat, but about 3 times the cost of a Tilley and required extensive maintenance.  The Tilley just goes through the washer once in a while, a quick stretch over my knee to get it back to the right size and shape and away I go.

Another vote for Tilleys, you'll be hard pressed to find a better outdoors* hat IMO.

*yes I realise that almost all hats are for outdoors, but you know what I mean. :D
