Any thoughts on this?
on: August 29, 2010, 03:09:39 PM
the ITP SA2 Eluma LED: http://www.flashaholics.co.uk/itp/itp-sa2-eluma.html

Just wondering if anyone here has one (or one of the other variants) and what they think of it.  Features and price both appeal to me, plus there is a positive review over on CPF but I'd like to hear from somebody that's carried it for a while.

Thanks in advance. :)

I don't have one, but I have some experience with 2x AA lights and not a big fan of them because of the length. I prefer either a single CR123 or a single AA or AAA if getting spare batteries anywhere is an issue. YMMV of course :)

For day-to-day I agree and I have a few 1xAAA and 1xAA lights, but I do fancy a modern 2xAA as I only have a maglite with TerraLUX drop-in that's pretty out of date compared to what's on offer now. :)

A 2AA light is very handy for those times when you need more light. With good rechargeable batteries, they are very economical to run.

If you can stretch your budget a little, I would go with Quark AA2 or Fenix LD20.
If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck.

While it does look like a lot of torch for your money :)

I'd probably go down MH's route too :)

I think my issue with the Quark is that (as I understand it) it reverts back to moonlight after it's been switched off for more than three seconds, so you have to cycle through levels to get to a moderate amount of light.  Either that or straight into full blast if the bezel is left tightened.  Same is basically true of the Fenix I believe.

The feature I rather like about the ITP is that it has a level memory so as to come back on at the level you last used.  Combined with the infinite level adjustment and I reckon it's a light that'll suit me.

BTW this is all your fault. ;)  After Chako's thread about light where you suggested a 1xAAA, a 1xAA and a 2xAA, I realised that I didn't have a good 2xAA to my name. :-\

Glad to be of help.  :D

The Quark tactical may be more to your liking with its 2 programmable modes. Otherwise, if the ITP fits your needs, go for it.

I like that the ITP has both side and tail switch,I have a light with this feature and find it useful  :tu:

[edit] for instance I tend to use the side switch when not running around in a ninja suit then I would use the tail switch as it feels more tactical and fitting  :mn: ::)   :D

Oh, I hadn't seen that one.  On reflection I still think the ITP sounds a bit more "me" but that Quark's a very close second. :tu:

OK I went and got the iTP SA2 Eluma and I gotta say I'm pretty impressed.  Build quality overall seems good with no marks on the anodising and well formed facets.  Perhaps the only obviously cheap looking part is the '+' battery terminal, which is just a bent brass tab coming down form the back of the head.  Works, but doesn't scream 'quality' IMO.  The pocket clip is a solid part of the light and cannot be removed, but works well and sits comfortably under my little finger when held with my thumb on the tail switch.

This light seems to be all about throw, with a mirror smooth reflector it creates a very tight, bright hotspot and a wide but soft spill.  The three basic light levels are (as advertised) low: 5 lumen, medium: 35 lumen, High: 190 lumen, with a strobe setting and a fully adjustable light mode as well.

It comes with extra o-rings, a open top belt pouch, a spare boot for the standard forward clicky switch, plus an alternative reverse clicky switch and low profile boot to go over it.  Personally I like a forward clicky switch but I gotta say I'm impressed with getting an alternative switch for people who disagree with me. :tu:

On-off is handled by the tail switch, and modes are set with the forward switch (which is found just ahead of the pocket clip).  Sequence is; low-med-high-strobe, with a longer press and hold you get the adjustable light mode.  The ramping up and down is a bit quick IMO making it hard to stop on just the level you want.  Also it might be nice if the ramping didn't start as soon as you go into the adjustable mode, as it stands the very act of holding down the switch to enter the mode means that you are changing the light level before you know it. A PITA if you had it at a level you really liked. :-\  The big bonus to my mind though is the mode memory, whatever mode you switch off in is the mode you'll get when switched back on.  Personal preference really and YMMV.

All in all a good value light, especially considering the low price. :tu:

Will do.  This'll be seeing a bit of use as a work light so we'll find out how it holds up. :)

Nice write up. For the features and brightness, it is very good value for money (UK prices).

Will be nice to hear your thoughts on the light after you have used it a bit at work etc.
