Here is something a bit different for you folks. Shane over at Multitasker sent me 3 very special and unique prototypes of the Multitasker Ultralight. The sad thing about this, I do not yet have one for the collection. With the addition of these prototypes, I will be adding one of these hopefully by the end of August...if all goes well.
Onto the photographs.

(Gen 1 Multitasker with 3 Ultralight prototypes)

(Here we have the largest of the 3 prototypes that Shane sent me. This one included a tanto blade that is a bit wider then it should be along with a metal bit holder that allows bits to slide right through.)

\
(Here, I took two bits from another prototype to show you the lovely metal bit holder. Of course, when I picked up the tool, both bits promptly slide through. All I can say, the machining cost alone would be prohibitive.)

(here is the next prototype. Note that this one has a stow away lanyard much like the first example with blade. The attached bit holder is now plastic and works very well on capturing the bits. Also included is a gun sight wrench that fits the driver tool and is stored in the bit holder. I have no clue about the outside thread on the tip of the driver tool barrel, possibly an accessory point for something.

(Here is the third prototype. I am a bit proud of myself for figuring out on my own that the small threaded end fits the OTIS tool. I later found that the production Ultralight comes with a brass removable pick that screws onto this attachment point. Either way, I did try it on the OTIS cleaning kit snake and it fits like a charm. I can see plenty of folks adding this tool to their OTIS kit with or apart from the Gerber MP600 that seems to come with the cleaning kits.

Well what can I say; there are plenty of things I could talk about that the photos do not show, but I won’t bore you to death about the details. I find these tools represent a neat insight into the development of a current model multi-tool. A big hearty thank you goes out to Shane for consenting to share these prototypes and to allow us a brief glimpse in the process of designing a production tool.
