Please suggest a knife/tool to purchase as gift
on: September 04, 2010, 03:22:39 AM
I would like to purchase a knife for my fiancee's brother.  He goes camping every other weekend during the summer.  I would like more than a knife, but the multi tools I saw seem to be tool first and knife second.  I dont want that.  Is there anything that is a good, decent size, good quality knife that also has some other features even if some are slightly gimmicky, like bottle opener :D?  The only thing i saw that might be good is the Gerber Crucial Green. I dont know anything about knives, so any other suggestions are greatly appreciated.  I was hoping to spend about $50.  Many thanks in advance for your help.

Hi, welcome to MTO :)

Perhaps a Skeletool would do the job - they are really popular and can be picked up at a decent price.

Leatherman Crater c55: Knife, screwdriver bits and bottle opener.  If you find older. retired leatherman knives, they come with more bits

Not much use for pliers camping, my choice would be Wenger Ranger 78 or Victorinox One handed Trekker.

A great camping knife would be a Buck 110. Then you can grab any multitool. Multis focus a lot of attention on having different tools and not so much on the knife. Just my opinion, of course.

My choices would be either Victorinox OH Trekker

Or Buck X-tract Fin

For camping, the Trekker's saw is certainly a big plus, and OHO (one hand opening) is nice

Personally, I see pliers being a vital tool in any situation.

I'm with Andreas here and recommend my old friend, the Buck Xtract.  Smooth as silk OH blade with a few other bit's that are handy, but don't get in the way of the blades function.
I'm back!!

all the suggestions are really good. I would add the suggestion of a Victorinox Farmer, has most of the functionality of a Trekker, in a small and elegant package. http://www.sakwiki.com/tiki-index.php?page=Farmer

The website generally is a good reference if you are interested in going in the direction of a swiss army knife.

For a traditional Swiss Army Knife (SAK) I'd look at these Victorinox products:

Camper: http://www.sakwiki.com/tiki-index.php?page=Camper

Hiker: http://www.sakwiki.com/tiki-index.php?page=Hiker

Fieldmaster: http://www.sakwiki.com/tiki-index.php?page=Fieldmaster

Huntsman: http://www.sakwiki.com/tiki-index.php?page=Huntsman

Or perhaps a Farmer: http://www.sakwiki.com/tiki-index.php?page=Farmer

SAK's and camping go together like peanut butter and Jelly. :)
Be excellent to each other and always know where your towel is.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions.  I looked through all of them and I really like the skeletool.  I think it has the greatest wow factor but still gets excellent reviews for functionality. :D
