I was never 100% happy with how this one turned out, I rescued it from the shed and had another go using a sledge-hammer handle

I finished this one off today,
I need to have a play and see if the handle is too long, also not sure if the head is stable

These are looking pretty good from this end !!

Very much liking the two tools you've come up with sparky !!

For my metal wedges I've been using cut off and somewhat ground down
large flat nails (cut masonry nails) they're case hardened and work great
for a axe/hatchet metal wedge.  Cut them down to about 3.2 cm or longer
if need be and grind the sides of the heads flat, dipping in water so not to
lose the hardening, grind an edge on the end and hammer 'em in.  The brand
I use are "Maze Nails" made here in the US.  Use these straight in hammer
eyes and grain slant in on wood axe wedges.  Although I've recently had
success with two crossed wood wedges and I think I'll be doing this with
my axes from now on. :)

Thanks Puukko,
pictures of your work are always welcome  :salute:

The hatchet is a bit of an experiment as theres not much 'meat' on that handle, if it slips I will cut it down and wedge it

Hi, Pukko.

Great wedges if you can source them locally are the round wedges.

A few of mine for everything from hammers to pickaxes.

about those round wedges....

Yes, I have these in a couple of my stock production axes
and now that I think of it those heads have never come lose,
although I've never tried one on a head that I've hung.

Thanks for the tip !

I think that heads a lot better on a long haft, it looked a real handful as a hatchet :)

I think I might go down the round wedge route, as I would imagine there seated a lot more securely?

Looks to be a very usable work axe sparky415 !!
Japanese splitting axes have what we would
consider to be "thin" handles.

I might suggest a diamond keeper knot in that
lanyard though.  ;)

I thought I should give my regular user a bit of TLC
Unfairly it’s never been my favourite I think because after I hung it it became loose, I hammered the wedges in further, it became loose again so I lost my patience with it and really hammered them in too far  :-[
But it’s stayed firm since them, I’ve never been gentle with it, it gets thrown in my car, put away dirty and wet...

I don’t take out every nick in either my axes or knives, I would soon run out of steel, I just try to make them useable
After a bit of a sharpen with my diamond stones,

I then move on to my sandpapers 1200 up to 3000 grit  :2tu: :2tu: :2tu:

 Not really I’m in my garage, I just run the head over my polishing wheel,  ;)

Ready for work  :tu:

I've got one as well (in blue), it can, from personal experience withstand gale force winds if you use the TBS  :tu:
