Do you let others use your tools/toys?
on: June 30, 2007, 01:49:41 AM

I don't care to let others use my stuff.
I use to, but it seems like sh*t alway's happens when I do. Things get broken or lost.

There have been times at soccer games a ref will come up to the parents on the sideline and ask if anyone has a pen. I just keep my mouth shut with a blank look on my face as I look at everyone else.

Yeah, I think to myself. I got a pen and I paid a lot of money for it and your not using it. lol   :)

I have even told people that can see a knife clipped to my pocket or a multi-tool on my belt that I don't have one when they ask. If they have something right there that needs to be cut open or something I will do it for them. If it's someone wanting to take my knife/tool and go do god knows what with it then that's different.

Should I feel bad for acting this way?
Hope not, because I don't...  :P ;D :D ;)

Anyone else keep things to themself when others ask for things you have?  :)

I don;t usually let things out of my sight, but I find many folks are intimidated by even a SAK.  I'll often hand it to them and say "Careful, it's really sharp" and they hand it back to me and ask if I'll do whatever for them!

People who can handle tools and knives usually carry their own.  People who can't should be well supervised or watch from the sidelines.

I usually carry a replaceable blade razor knife that I can "lend" to someone who might need one.  If a real knife or tool is needed, I'll probably do it for them.  People are so damn stupid these days...You can't even hand them the retractable razor without them looking at it wide eyed then hand it back and want you to open it for them.

That's what I like about the new Superknife type knives.  People usually recognize them as razor blades and don't do silly things like they would with a SAK or multi.  No impromptu A Team or Macguyver themes, just take it, use it and return it.  And if they break it, well it's only $5 gone.

So now I need to start carrying my good knife and a cheapo spare knife, my good multi and a loaner multi, my good flashlight and a spare maglite, etc, etc.

I'm going to need a good belt and a spare belt just to hold my pants up!  :P :)

I often cringe when I lend my tools, but I'll usually do it anyway and tell myself "they're meant to be used..." Besides, I've got good warrenty coverage on most of my tools.  :)  I do usually tell them that it's very sharp. I also usually ask what they need it for, and then hand it to them with the appropriate tool opened.

Good idea... I usually cringe when I hear the phrase "we need to pry this part off, you got a knife, right?"

Thinking about this a bit today, I realized that I must be fortunate; nearly everyone I'm usually with has a knife or a tool of their own available and so never asks to borrow mine. The only exceptions to this are the ladies, and they usually don't ask to borrow the knife, they want me (or whichever male is closest) to do the job for them. I never decline to help a damsel in distress.

I am usually the guy with the tool when people need something done, I do get the occasional eyebrow...almost like I am some kind of outsider. I don't let anyone USE anything unless they intend to replace it... nuff said.  :multi:

I don't let people use them unless I know exactly what they are going to do. I also give it to them with the appropriate tool out, so they don't fumble with it and eventually are like "Ooh it has a pen? What else does it have?" and they don't even start for anothder 10 minutes. ::)

I never let strangers use my tools, but I often let my friends. They know I'm handy and carry tools. I'm confident they would replace anything that got broken. I will do the work myself for anyone else. It's the closest I'll ever get to being a hero. (being called McGuyver gets old though)

Just as sure as eggs are eggs, some bozo would claim illiteracy, even though I know their parents are married.
I learned my lesson long ago,the good stuff never gets loaned out.Either the asker gets some cheapo to use,or I do it for them.

I won't let anybody use my LM Wave that is always on my hip. I let them use my 10 years old SAK instead. I also carry my SAK in my pocket to suplement my Wave.
