Thoughts on the Dereelight Javelin?
on: September 22, 2010, 05:50:20 PM
Anyone in these parts have one?  I've been looking for a 2xAA light with good brightness and respectable throw for a sensible amount of money, and the Javelin seems to fit the bill pretty well.  I'm not big into super-fancy lights, but I do like multiple (non-flashing) modes.  The fact that the Javelin is also a P60 host leaves the future open for upgrades or specializations.  It is somewhat more expensive than other options I'm looking at, but the potential flexibility and somewhat futureproof nature of the light would be worth the extra dough.

The question is...is it worth it to have a 2xAA P60 host?  I figure Deree will probably have further modules available that will work in that voltage range, but the vast majority of P60 mods require more yumph.  I know there's a 3xAA extension available, but it seems to defeat the point.  If I'm not going to roll my own, is it worth the trouble?

My other candidates so far are the 4Sevens MiNi AA^2 (which would sacrifice throw for portability) and the Fenix E21 (which seems to be a pretty good performer for the price, just not up to the "heat" of the Javelin).  Maybe the iTp SA2, though it is a little more complex than I'm thinking.

Thanks for any replies!

I have 5 P60 hosts, but none of them are 2xAA bodies.

I like the idea of a 2xAA P60 host, but like you said, the limiting factor for the moment is that you have to buy only P60 drop-ins designed for lower voltage.

Dereelight and Solarforce are the only companies I know of (without going the custom route) that currently produce drop-ins designed for the lower voltages of 2xAA cells (unless you used 14500 Li-Ion cells or NiZn cells).

I am moving away from Li-Ion powered lights, so I am now paying more attention to AA lights again.
The Fenix E21 (and E10) are the ones I am currently looking at.

The Mini AA^2 looks like a really nice light as well (and the disco modes are hidden).
If they release a version with a neutral white LED, I'd consider one of those.

I didn't know Solarforce had any low voltage P60 modules out.  I'll have to look them up.  Didn't think of sticking 14500s in it, though that's mostly because I'm trying hard to avoid Li-Ion batteries.  The NiZns sound promising, but they're still a touch young to invest in for me, especially when the 2nd gen is supposedly just another year away and I have a bunch of LSD NiMh already.

More and more the E21 looks like it might be getting the nod since I'm really wanting a light that I can take out into the deer woods, and it needs a bit more penetration than the Mini would provide.
