Life in this old Alox after all
on: October 04, 2010, 04:48:45 PM
I nabbed this old Alox SAK with another knife I got from a Swiss Ebay seller & another forum member saw the auction pics & said "I would like that". Well a trade was discussed & then the knife arrived  >:( >:(.

The old bird had seen better days MANY years ago , both blade tips bent, blades really scratched up & the icing on the cake; the knife had been used as a hammer & the resulting damage meant the pruner blade would only open up half way before it seized up.

I tried sanding the damaged edges with minimal difference too blade opening  ??? ???. A bit of SAK rescue advise from the Bee man & a modified Neil approach did the trick :D :D pruner blade opens easily & now closes with a snap  8) 8).Quite a bit of work went into the pruner's bent blade tip the main blade did not need as much work. Both blade tips not perfect but much better now.A lot of wet n dry sanding & polish with John's special polish 'Green Magic' polish + Dremal & now the blades are nice n shiny :D :D.

A Sporky special  :P :D :D

My vintage Toolmaster harp multitool's tiny hammer did a great job tapping out the blade's bent tips  8) 8) :D :D

Nice to send the old girl on its way in a more presentable & usable shape  :D :D :D

:ahhh Great Job, the blades looks like mirrors...

Which is the name of the polisher you used? I would like to be able to do that too in some old knifes I have down here.

A UK member sent me some Sanjay Green Magic , a polish that is like a cake of soap. The secret is too use wet & dry sand paper , I used a 600 grit then a 1200 grit.Sanding the blade one way & using the paper wet works a lot quicker than dry, I discovered  ::) :D.
You could use almost any kind of polish or even a light cutting compound along with a Dremal like tool with a polishing cloth attachment to get the mirror finish. There is one or two deep scratches I could not get out but it is a million times better than before.

Yup, thanks to that stellar job you'll be able to pass that one down to your offspring.  :tu:

I promised it too anther forum member before I got it , so I was pretty keen too sort it out. I have told them they are not allowed to trade this SAK  :D :D :D.

Great job there Matt!  :gimme:

Do not talk too me about snapping bent blade tips     . I had the blade tip almost perfectly straight on my first BO LM Mini & it snapped  :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh. Luckily Neil did not have any qualms about a circumcised BO Mini  :D :D :D(I traded it too Neil  :D).

Still got all your fingers Mat ;)

Good work chap :tu:

And you finally found a use for a Harp :D

Got all my Fingers   only just   :ahhh :ahhh hence the modified Neil approach otherwise my hands  would of looked like they belonged too a careless butcher who likes a drink  :D :D.

I think I may have found the ONLY use for a Harp MT  :P :D :D
