Power Assist tool load
on: October 12, 2010, 11:13:08 PM
I lost my old PowerLock in the bush, and am looking for a replacement.  How does the Power Assist compare to the original powerlock in regards to tool load?  Do the assisted blades take up a lot of space in the handles, leaving way less room for implements than the Powerlock?  Also are the interior tools just as easily swapped out, even with the complicated assisted blades?  Thanks guys!

Thanks very much Medic.  I do not understand why a non-assisted outside opening version with more space in the handle isn't offered.  That would be the perfect SOG in my opinion, although more attention to quality like LM would be nice.

I think I will go for the PL again, now with wussy gear covers!

Well I think someone here said that SOG is working on a new tool and that it was super secret, so let’s just hope that SOG will make a MT with outside opening tools. I wish to see a Powerlock with gear covers and the old style locking mechanism since I don’t really like the piano locks.

I picked up a Power Assist a month or two ago.  I replaced the V-cut with a Saw and the flat head screwdriver with an awl.  The awl and phillips head driver have to go in the middle and they overlap a bit.

It is true that that the two assisted opening knives take up a whole handle.  I love the assisted opening function, it is fast.  The knives had a bit of play.  I tightened down the nut, and eliminated the play.  If you tighten it too much the blade won't open.  It is a trial and error process to get the right tightness.  That being said, it is a multi tool, so IMO blade play seems more of an academic issue rather than a practical one.

For me, giving up a couple of tools in the handle is not an issue.  It has all the tools I need and use.

I quickly grew tired of the piano locks.  I also prefer the PT-510 for its compactness, in fact I kind of consider my powerlocks spare parts for the Paladin  :)

Well, I'm still broke so no decisions made yet!  It seems the piano locks are not favoured by most people, so perhaps I will look for an older PL to replace my lost one.  Gear covers would be nice, maybe I'll do some swapping if the covers are removable.  Thanks guys.

The gear covers are not removeable, but you should be able to easily find PL's with the old-style locking mechanism.

Hmmm...old style locks + new gear covers....was there a transition model with that combination?
