Inexpensive flashlight with selector ring
on: November 14, 2010, 09:30:42 PM
Are there any inexpensive flashlights with a selector ring like the Fenix TA line? I'm not looking for super DX cheap, but something in the less than $50 range? I would prefer either 1xAA or 2xAA, but if I have to I'll invest in some RCR123. Smaller is better, I don't need or want a super thower.

Not too many on the market. Sunwayman M10 (1AA) and M20 (2AA) have a magnetic selector ring for different brightness levels. Starting price is about $70, so you will need to up your budget.
If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck.

You can still find Nitecore EZ and EX lights on eBay with the ramping UI, probably your best bet right now.

I'm seen a lot about the Nitecore ramping UI, could you explain it to me?

There's a procedure to put Nitecore in a special mode where the light slowly increases in intensity until you stop it - from then on, the light will always turn on at that level until you change it again in the same ramping mode.  Not... exactly what you wanted, but it does allow customizable outputs.

So just like the iTP C series. I have a C7T which I love, but the idea of being able to go to any mode without turning the flashlight on sounds really appealing.

Dosun R1 and R5 on this page. Not the brightest, but quality is okay and the clearance price is good.

Yeah, but "smaller is better" kind of rules out the Dosuns :)
Half-ass done wholeheartedly!

Unfortunately neither low price nor smaller go with selector ring, which cost more to make and takes extra space.

Then again maybe there's something new, I haven't been following flashlight scene for over a year now and new chinese brand lights are popping up faster than mushrooms.

Well I guess there's a reason I can't find many.
