My visit to the former US Naval Base
on: November 27, 2010, 03:42:40 AM
Subic Naval Base was the largest overseas military installation of the United States Armed Forces after Clark Air Base in Angeles City (also in the Philippines).

The US pulled out in 1992 when ount Pinatubo errupted. It's now Subic Bay Freeport Zone (similar to  Hong Kong and Singapore) spans a total of 13,800.60 hectares  Part of the 13,800.60 hectares is still virgin  forest. Aside from industrial, commercial and financial activities booming, its tourism is also boooming because of its resorts, parks, beaches and zoo.

At the time of our visit this  US naval ship was docked at the port. Can you identify this? I think it is a helicopter carrier.

There's a big number 5 on its side. I don't know what that means.

On our  way to "Zoobic" we were driving at a very slow pace to avoid running over ot hitting the wild monkeys. On both side the road is still virgin forest.

Taking pictures with the car windows closed for fear that the monkeys might grab my cam.

I recognized the type from one I saw at Norfolk.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Peleliu_%28LHA-5%29

I believe it could flood the inner bay and lower the rear door to allow marines in landing craft to ride out to the beach.  At the same time, more could be ferried to shore with the helicopters.

There are just 10 types of people in the world:  those who understand binary number systems, and those who don't

BlueDot, you are absolutely right. After doing some research in the local news i found out it's USS
Peleliu

I think that's another name for it.  A way to get the maximum number of marines to the beach in the shortest time.
