Christmas giveaway!
on:
December 07, 2010, 01:29:35 PM
OK, I have been a member of this forum for about half a year now. Just became a member of the no-life-club (which means I have spend way too much time here...
). Had a lot of fun. Took part in a lot of giveaways, and even won a cool multitool! I love this place, and here are wonderful and generous people around. Time to give something back!
Today I bought this box. I will fill it with some nice things and send it to the winner of this giveaway. Don't expect anything spectacular, I can't afford a Swisstool for myself, so I can't put one in that box. But some small useful things, maybe some chocolate, a little surprise...
If you want to know what's in this box, and want to have it, you need to do 2 things:
Pick a number between 1 and 100. I will let a random number generator draw a number to select the winner.
It's a Christmas giveaway, so post something related to Christmas. A picture of your Christmas decoration, a poem, a secret family recipe, a story... Just keep it family friendly!
Open to any member of this forum over 18 (the box may contain a knife). The winner will be drawn next monday, hoping that the box will arrive in time before Christmas!
(That Santa on the picture will not be part of the giveaway...!)

we cellebrate Christmas by Gregorian calendar (old calendar) on 7th of January. I'll throw in a story here.
During a comunism here people were democratically alloud to celebrate christmass but... Well let's say that it was not "healthy" to do so, and even if yo do dont tell arround, you wouldn't go to jail, or anything drastic you'll be discriminated and laugh upon. :-) But... My grandmom had a trick. Santa Claus name here is Bozic Bata, and I have uncle we call Bata (it's sort of nick name wich is very familiar here). So, every christmass I got a bunch of gifts from my uncle, and just guess who was my childhood hero. :-) As a matter of fact a lot of children here had uncle named Bata... Kind of sad story, but when you think of it, it reflect christmass spirit and what people can think of just to make their loved ones happy...
:-)

This is a great idea, so here goes. The lyrics to the song that is posted below are from a song called "The Christmas Guest". It is a song that I remember from when I was a young boy and I still like it to this day. It has been done by a few people, but the version that I remember the best is the origional by Grandpa Jones. Here are the lyrics and I hope you enjoy it:
My number is: 24
It happened one day near December's end
Two neighbors called on an old friend
And they found his shop so meager and lame
Made gay with a thousand bows of green
And Conrad was sittin' with face ashined
When he suddenly stopped as he stiched a twine
And he said "Oh friends at dawn today
When the cock was crowin' the night away
The Lord appeared in a dream to me
And said 'I'm comin' your guest to be.'
So I've been busy with feet astir
And strewin' my shop with branches of fir
The table is spread and the kettle is shined
And over the rafters the holly is twined
Now I'll wait for my Lord to appear
And listen closely so I will hear His step
As He nears my humble place
And I'll open the door and look on His face"
So his friends went home and left Conrad alone
For this was the happiest day he'd known
For long since his family had passed away
And Conrad had spent many a sad Christmas day
But he knew with the Lord as his Christmas guest
This Christmas would be the dearest and best
So he listened with only joy in his heart
And with every sound he would rise with a start
And look for the Lord to be at his door
Like the vision he'd had a few hours before
So he ran to the window after hearin' a sound
But all he could see on the snow-covered ground
Was a shabby begger who's shoes were torn
And all of his clothes were ragged and worn
But Conrad was touched and he went to the door
And he said "You know, your feet must be frozen and sore
I have some shoes in my shop for you
And a coat that'll keep you warmer too"
So with grateful heart, the man went away
But Conrad noticed the time of day
And wondered what made the Lord so late
And how much longer he'd have to wait
When he heard a knock he ran to the door
But it was only a stranger once more
A bent ol' lady with a shawl of black
With a bundle of kindlin' piled on her back
She asked for only a place to rest
But that was reserved for Conrad's great guest
But her voice seemed to plead "Don't send me away
Let me rest for awhile on Christmas day"
So Conrad brewed her a steamin' cup
And told her to sit at the table and sup
But after she left he was filled with dismay
For he saw that the hours were slippin' away
And the Lord hadn't come as He said He would
And Conrad felt sure he'd misunderstood
When out of the stillness he heard a cry
"Please help me, and tell me where am I!"
So again he opened his friendly door
And stood disappointed as twice before
It was only a child who'd wandered away
And was lost from her family on Christmas day
Again, Conrad's heart was heavy and sad
But he knew he should make the little girl glad
So he called her in and he wiped her tears
And quieted all her childish fears
Then he led her back to her home once more
But as he entered his own darkened door
He knew the Lord was not comin' today
For the hours of Christmas had passed away
So he went to his room and he knelt down to pray
And he said "Dear Lord, why did You delay?
What kept You from comin' to call on me?
For I wanted so much Your Face to see"
When soft in the silence, a voice he heard
"Lift up your head, for I kept my word
Three times my shadow crossed your floor
And three times I came to your lonely door
I was the begger with bruised, cold feet
And I was the woman you gave somethin' to eat
I was the child on the homeless street.
Three times I knocked and three times I came in
And each time I found the warmth of a friend
Of all the gifts love is the best
And I was honored to be your Christmas guest."

For Christmas, my family always get together in the evening for dinner (Turkey with all the fixin's) and presents. I'm sure all the kids would love to rip open the presents at 6am like I used to with my brother and sister when we were kids but we all live under different roofs now. It's just easier for the whole family to get together Christmas night... plus all the adults get to sleep in on Christmas morning.
BTW, here's a long-standing traditional with my family for Christmas. During the holidays, we always watch this movie:
This is called a Swiss Army Knife. Do you know what Switzerland is? Switzerland is a place where they don't like to fight, so they get people to do their fighting for them while they ski and eat chocolate. - Larry David

My Christmas story? This will officially be the 10th year in a row I cook Christmas dinner for the family. Started in 2000 when I was 18 - my mom broke her leg skiing (spiral fracture, very nasty) and couldn't cook. I volunteered, and since I did a good enough job I've been "volunteered" to do it every year since then. I should have served a frozen turkey that first year and I'd not be in this mess.

The pic below is of my wife's side of the family getting the Christmas tree home. You can't tell from this pic, but there was a total of 10 people in the van including the tree!

The Philippines celebrates Christmas like no other country in the region. Christmas actually starts here in September and lasts until the Feast of Epiphany which is in January. With this extraordinarily long Christmas season there are numerous events around the country.
Walking through the malls and main roads aound the country, Christmas is everywhere. You can see different Christmas lanterns and their kaleidescopic radiance is cast by hundreds of thousands of blinking lights. Each lantern lights are electronically controlled. Heres some pics.

Here's my poem.
What Do We Love About Christmas?
What do we love about Christmas;
Does our delight reside in things?
Or are the feelings in our hearts
The real gift that Christmas brings.
It's seeing those we love,
And sending Christmas cards, too,
Appreciating people who bring us joy
Special people just like you.
