The cheap tablet I bought my wife was indeed as bad as the reports said it was.  If it had a decent screen it would have been worthwhile, but I felt like I was going to crush it every time I pressed my finger onto the screen, and anything less wouldn't even register.

So, the very next day I bought my wife a new phone (Motorola XT860) and she loves it.

She had a Palm IIIx a few years ago and didn't like it.  Ever since then she's been resistive to the idea of ebooks, organizers and so on, so when she started to consider a smartphone I wanted to jump on it.

As for the tablet, well it wasn't returnable but it will function well enough as a digital photo frame!

FWIW phone sucks for reading books, I like my kobo reader much better. It literally lasts a month on one charge and easily readable in strong light. I paid $100 for it and think they are even cheaper now.

I've been reading on smartphones for years, and on PDA's much longer than that.  I have no interest in a dedicated reader when I already have a perfectly good phone.  To me, having a dedicated reader in addition to my phone makes as much sense as also carrying an address book, internet tablet, mp3 player and so on.

I used to carry a cell phone and PDA and I often left the PDA at home and missed having it. Its more convenient to have an all in one device.

Well I only carry mine when I expect to read enough to justify, and when I can I usually have a bag with me so it's no bother.

That's part of my problem- I can't plan my days like that. I've left for work in the morning and three different jobs at three different dockyards later I'm coming home.  I went to work on a Tuesday morning just to do some paperwork and ended up coming home Wednesday afternoon after having gone several hundred kilometers.

I either carry all the stuff with me (or in the Jeep) or I simply don't have it available when I need or want it.
