Tool Swaps Outs
on: October 05, 2007, 05:30:48 PM
Hi,

Id like to replace the V cutter for the serrated line cutter on my new Powerlock. I don’t see a problem with that, however I’d also like to add the wire cutter I saw posted in this forum ( can’t find it again) when it becomes available. The question is, what to remove?

I noticed that there is a nylon spacer next to the ¼ drive. I’m thinking that the spacer is there because, A, Sog didn’t want to add an extra tool. B, the spacer allows you to pull the can opener out. C, the ¼ drive has an odd width so the spacer makes up for it., or D, it has something to do with the twisting torque while using the ¼ drive.

I was wondering if anybody thinks that there would be a problem replacing the spacer with the wire cutter when available?

Thanks,

Kidder

You are limited to 4 "large" tools that fit in the two outside slots of the PowerLock.  If you try to put a longer tool into any of the inner spaces, they may interfere with the opening and closing of the  plier head.

Here are 4 blades in the outside positions with room for 8 interior implements ( a total of 12), getting ready to order some of the serrated V-cutters to add to this SOG ( my latest $22 eBay find). Had to take it 100% apart and drop it in to the parts cleaner to get the crud and sand out of it. Now it work like new, you really can't kill an SOG multitool. Thanx DEF & Anthony for the 2 blades - tiger look - black & silver.

My other PowerLock has 8 large implements (2 on each of the outside positions (2x4=8) and 4 small implements in the middle positions of each side.

If you add scissors they require the space of 2 implements

I'm looking at those four knife blades. Four!!  :-\

I don't think that would work for me.
In order to be certain of having the right tool for every job.........one must first acquire a lot of tools

Thanks Def,

Obviously you can’t put a large tool in the middle. It wouldn’t close. If there are no dumb questions, this one sure came close.

Thanks again,

Kidder

From what I can tell from the picture, it looks like you took the nylon spacer out and added another screwdriver, is that correct?

I’m assuming that there is a threaded rod, or pin that punches out after you remove the caps? Just line the tools back up, put the pin through, a little locktite and tighten it back up?

Any tips or tricks?

Thanks,

Kidder

The spacers are just that...spacers!  Replace them with anything that will fit...

Just use two 1/4" nut drivers to remove the pin and slide it out.  I didn't use any loc tite on mine and they haven't budged yet.  I periodically check them with my fingers to see if they are loose though.

Don't worry about dumb questions Kidder- I've got more of them than anyone else could possibly come up with! :D

I didn't realize that you could sneak a couple of extra blades in- when my pile of parts come in I may have to experiment some!
