Spyderco opening tricks?
on: January 14, 2011, 06:58:35 PM
Last night I had my Spyderco Captain in my pocket when I went to feed hay.  Since it's so cold here, I had my heavy gloves on and couldn't quite get my thumb in the thumb hole.  On a whim, I gave the knife a flip, holding it horizontally and to my surprise, I was able to flip it open to lock!  :o

I was able to do it several times in a row. :)
Is this a normal feature?  Does everybody but me know about this cool little flip trick?

That doesn't work for my Folding Razel, btw.

Try grip the blade and shake down the handle.

I'm surprised you can't get your thumb in the hole though, I've test all mine with ski gloves and can open them without problem.

Some models wrist flip easily some dont. I was doing that with the Puma General long before I found holes, waves, studs, disks or flippers to OHO a knife.   :D   I do not use the wrist flip to open a knife very often any more as its is hard on you knife.  :)   But it is kinda  8)  way to open your knife isnt it.
What? Enablers! Are you serrrrious? Where? I dont see any.

The Spyderco hole was the original one-handed opening method for pocket knives - they were actually designed so you could hold the hole and shake out the handle.  There's entire Youtube videos on Spyderco opening tricks if you want to look.

Me?  Butter fingers.  I'm more likely to implant the knife in the wall or a person (including myself) than successfully open the blade using a trick, so I try and stay away from it.

I'd heard of the spydie drop, and seen it on youtube, but as a relative newcomer to spyderco knives, had never been able to make it work. Just now I was practicing it with the UKPK, and it actually works, albeit, 2 times from 5 attempts. With practice it could be more consistent. Does this put any strain on the knives or shorten their lives at all?
