Bear Grylls has to be like that.  I don't agree with a lot of his stuff (and feel as many of us do about him) but you have to remember, it's TV.  Les Stroud may be more accurate in his survival skills, but lets face it- he's boring as all get out, which doesn't make for good TV, which means it doesn't bring in the advertiser dollars as much as interesting TV.  For example, call up your local network affiliate and see what the cost of a 30 second spot in a Beverly Hillbillies rerun would cost versus a 30 second spot during the Superbowl.  :D

Bear, for all the stupid risks he takes, is much more controversial and more entertaining.

As for this guy (I can never remember his name) making the excuse that he didn't have to let people know where he was going because he did it all the time is like saying a skydiving instructor can jump out of a plane without a parachute because he does it all the time and knows his way down.

Seems to me that anyone that experienced should know the dangers and not be such an idiot about it.

Wow! :o And to think your notebook has more memory than that today! :D

My phone has a faster processor (1100+ MHz) and more memory (512M) and more storage (32 gigs) than the largest server in that room.

Pretty weird when you think about it that way.  Actually, I think the web servers did have 512 in them back then. Probably cost $2000.00.. haha

Oh, I missed your response, Grant..

So very true!  He got complacent and he got bit. Just like Bear probably will one of these days. You are so right about Bear having so much more entertainment value though.  Just like Steve Irwin.

That's why I said "Really, his only BIG mistake was not telling anybody where he was going and when he'd be back. Second biggest was doing what he did, alone."

Silly testosterone. (and desire for ratings)

Personally, I prefer Les Stroud.. but then again, I'm fascinated by hunks of metal that turn screws, squeeze and cut stuff. ;)

Bear Grylls has to be like that.

That was no multitool It was a Queen pocketknife out of the box.  ;)

I think I have to agree with Doug Ritter on this one.  He took a stupid risk by not telling anyone where he was going, and by going off by himself.  This is the kind of stupid risk that gets most people killed.

I dunno... thousands of people venture without telling anyone where they're going. Ending up amputating your own limbs as a result is an extremely rare outcome. Hell, people rarely suffer any significant discomfort as a result of such so called stupid risk.

After watching the film and the documentary and now half way through the book I get the impression he really is very aware of the mistake he made of not telling anyone . As for going it alone , I can't see a problem with that , people do that all the time . What about single handed yachtsmen .

While I do normally go out with a group of friends I have also gone out hiking alone on many occasions.  What I do make sure I do though is at least give a rough route and timetable to someone before setting out.
Be excellent to each other and always know where your towel is.

Yes, and ask any rescue worker what the number one cause of hauling half eaten bodies out of the woods is- no one knew where they were.

Lots of maniac drivers get where they are going safely every day, but that doesn't mean that driving like a maniac is a good idea.

Yes, many people may go in the woods and get out safely, but in the odd occasion where folks take the proper precautions, they are more often than not extracted with all of the limbs they went in with.
