My new phone : a Nexus One
on: April 10, 2011, 02:14:40 AM
Finally I got one of these! I had to wait for my current cell provider to end my contract and propose me absolutly nothing interresting (I was still paying for network access fees), then I switched to Videotron.

Nice phone, really fast screen, comparing to my Nokia 5230.
Have to install a couple of basic apps, as a file explorer to access my SD card, pdf reader, and a real battery level metter.

Do you have any good and free app you cannot live without ?

Here are some pix...

I have a N1 and absolutely love it. One thing, you'll want to buy a second battery, it gets terrible battery life.

As I understand it, most Droid phones do have terrible battery life?

Yep, the combination of a large screen, WiFi, GPS, Bluetooth and a fast processor means that really they don't last that long. I keep BT, WiFi and GPS off unless I need it, but I still sometimes don't a get day out of the battery. My battery is used though, new it lasted longer.

Yep, it's the reason my wife doesn't want one.  I, however, am used to terrible battery life from having a Nokia N95 for two years.  When I upgraded to a Droid phone having to charge every other day or so was just no big deal.

As for apps, Curvefish has some really nice, simple homescreen widgets.  I like Wi-Fi On/Off, Brightness Level and Autosync.  Titanium Backup is a great app, and if you don't have a document editor/viewer already installed OliveOffice is pretty good and free.

@jekostas: thanks for the suggestions. From CurveFish, I've downloaded the battery meter. Pretty neat and accurate.
Regarding an office editor, even if I don't think a cell phone is THE tool to edit a file, it'a always good to know you can to that.
I gonna take a look at the other suggestions. Thanks  :salute:

I'm not using the GPS, BT a lot. Well, GPS just when I'm geocaching (I have to test that on my N1), but BT no. Wifi... yes  :D That's the main reason I get that phone. To surf ... hum... on the toilet. Great quiet place with not a lot to do  ::)
But the battery is indead good for one day. I have a 4gig SD card, and wonder if I put a 16gig one for that reason.
But hey ! The screen is awsome!

Any other suggestions?

Nope, but my sometimes my phone doesn't last a single day. That's only on days when I use the GPS, but usually those are the days I need it most.

What's size of your SD card ? I've noticed on my Nokia that a 16 Gig was eating the battery when a 4Gig wasn't.

The Symbian OS has a very well known file indexing bug that'll eat battery life with large SDHC cards.  The file manager continually attempts to catalogue the card, and the constant process really drains the battery quickly.

With Nokia now switching over to the Windows 7 Mobile OS for their middle and high-end phones, it's unlikely to be fixed any time soon.

Good to know. I wasn't aware it was a bug.

The battery on my Motorola Defy has been quite solid, seems fine for a few days operation without a daily charge. I switch off wifi/gps/bluetooth whenever not needed. I suppose I'm a casual user only tho... also just upgraded the stock 2GB microSD to 16GB :D

So far I'm wondering how I ever lived without my 'droid!

So true ! :D  I'm now used to the interface and OS logic, and with some apps I've added like a bubble level, a converter, todo widget on so on, I feel confy with that phone.

Just have to understand the root stuff, now.

That bit's a lot of fun.  I just installed my third major OS update through a custom ROM last night.  Newer the Android OS, the faster my phone is running.

  faster...

As I said, I have to dig that.

Do you need to have an unblocked phone before ?

You need the phone rooted for sure, unlocked isn't necessary for some ROMs, it is for some.  The reason why the phone is faster is that Google is continually making the radio and basic system apps more efficient.

A couple weeks ago I got a Samsun Epic 4g, which shares almost all it's internals with the newer Nexus S (which is built by Samsung). It's a fantastic phone, I have fallen completely in love with Android. I had it for less than 12 hours before it was rooted and running a custom ROM. I'm now on my 3rd custom ROM already with it overclocked. Thing simply flies.

It's my first time with an Android phone, and it's become an integral part of my life. I call it my "electronic multitool".

What ROM are you using for overclocking?  I've just got the stock Cyanogenmod port from the Samdroid kitchen right now.

I'm currently running MidNIGHT ROM ( http://lostandtired.com/android-development ) with the Bonsai kernel. MidNIGHT is a tweaked version of the Bonsai ROM.

lol, I admit I'm a bit lost, too.  I began to read about root, ROM, and so on on some forums and...  :-\ I have no freaking idea of what these guys are talking about

It's actually not really that hard. I read some posts and asked for some help on Androidcentral.com (great guys, very very helpful and patient) and in a couple hours I went from complete noob to being able to root and flash my phone in my sleep. I'm on my third custom ROM and like fifth custom kernel, nit to mention all the other customization I've played with. This is in like 2 weeks of owning the thing. XDA-developers has some good forums too, but that's where it can quickly go very much over your head, I find the guys at Androidcentral keep everything more down to Earth and are generally more helpful. It sounds complex as all Hell at first, but really (at least with my phone) takes maybe 5 minutes to do the first time. I was iffy on trying it at first too, but when I did I was like "Really? That's it?" Now it's something I do for a few minutes here and there out of boredom.

Well, I gonna take a look at that site. I just need to find a crash course on that.

But I admit I'm a little bit afraid to brick my cell, too :-[
