Bear Grylls actually using his knife
on: February 13, 2011, 11:50:18 PM
Just saw a preview for the new season of Man Vs. Wild and I was very surprised to see Bear actually using that Gerber knife that he slapped his name on to.  Using it to cut a dead seal up into a wetsuit... but it's nice to see that he would actually use a product that he endorses.

Well, while the Suspension is not what we enthusiasts expect from a MT, it fits the needs of many average users who just want an "in case of" tool. So, if BG combines the knife and a tool for his shows, the tool might be useful. While I would always prefer a Victorinox tool over any other brand, I guess having an average tool is better than having none - and BG did not use tools on his shows by now. Think of it, the man is out there, having a blade, a backpack, a firestarter and his clothes - nothing more. Screwdrivers are of no value in the woods, so it does not matter if they are tiny (maybe it would be even better if they were missing). The canopener can be useful to, and a saw makes it easier to get wood for a fire. And there are two backup blades.

Still, the Suspension is heavy for what it is, and there are many better tools out there. But IF I had the choice to get a Gerber, or no tool at all, I would gladly take it. So I would not be too surprised to see it on the show someday...

I think you have Bear Grylls confused with Les Stroud (AKA Survivor Man). It has been proven a hundred times over that Bear is a fake and the stuff he does on his show is more likely going to get you killed rather than save your life in a real emergency situation...
Build a man a fire and he's warm for the day. Set a man on fire and he's warm for the rest of his life.

He probably uses the MT to "survive" in his hotel room at night, and the knife to "survive" in the wild with his camera crew by day :D
