RANT...This ticks me off!!!
on: February 17, 2011, 06:42:43 AM
I finally got my macbook back tonight after the thing not working for the past ten months.

I guess there was a warranty thing that we had to wait for in order for them to fix the thing.

So, its back, you'd think i'd be really, really happy right now that its working great and I finally get a computer again after ten months right?

Wrong. The whole reason that I really wanted the computer back so much is so that I could update my iphone to the most current iphone software.

Guess what? It turns out that the OS that my Macbook is running on doesen't support the new version of itunes. So, now I had to go out and spend another $30, and some more of my time waiting until the new OS comes before I can spend another three hours installing it just to update my iphone.

I wouldn't even waste the time if I didn't think that I was going to get a new phone later this year and have to find out that the new phone would have required that I update my computer anyway.

Moral of the story, now I'm stuck with the same Operating System on my iPhone until the thing arrives.

It just iffs me that the computer is less than 3 years old and apple cant even throw its customers a bone and make it so that an OS is OLD after 10 YEARS instead of THREE.

You gotta be kidding me!!!!

Thanks for reading, sorry about the long rant.

I think this is the correct place to post this.

Do you have bootcamp?  If not, you might be able to set up a virtual machine to update your iphone.  Download and install VMWare player, download TinyXP and use VMWare player to install, then install the newest itunes.  Its not as hard as it sounds, it just takes a little time.  TinyXP is a lot smaller than the normal XP too so it doesn't take as long to install.

I don't own anything from apple so take that for what its worth, just an idea.

Ah ha, was that the problem? Wy not bring it back then? I have some apple product and the seem to work fine, just like my windows stuff. I think the trick is to buy it, and if it is working, leave it alone. Do not try to up-date, tinker or anything like that. My oldest pc is about 6 years old and still going strong. Just a thought...  :)

Don't tinker with your PC  ???  I didn't even know that was an option haha.  I don't hate Apple, I used to have an old Ti Book before they went Intel.  The computer lasted a long time and it was great hardware, but I'm a software nerd so I ended up going through the same thing as the OP.  I'd find some new software that I wanted to try out but it wouldn't run because I didn't have the newest version of OSX.  But there was never a technical reason for it not to work, like new framework or anything. >:(

But as for the OP's problem, I'm sure you're not the only one who has that problem, there's probably a ton of info about it on the web if you search.  Oh and I was wrong when I said VMWare Player, VMWare Fusion is the Mac version.  They have a free 30 day trial and I think it comes with the Windows VM bundled in, so that's even easier than I said before.  Just one download and one long install, then just install itunes and you should be good to go.  I've never owned an iPhone or iPod so I've never tried this myself but that's what I would try first before upgrading to the new OS.

Simple answer here, get a droid!

1.  Rooting droids is easy as pie.
2.  No special software required to flash new and custom roms.
3.  Just, well, BETTER!

-Owner of a Droid 2 Global, rooted, rom-ed, themed, DROID DOES!

Ok ok, flame over, sorry about your bad luck with Apple, but your story is exactly why I am on a Toshiba running windows 7 right now.

It's funny to think that the best thing that ever happened to Apple was Windows Vista!   >:D

Seriously, if you deconstruct a Mac, you get last year's PC components running a proprietary version of Linux in a version that offers very limited user configurations- that's why there's no Mac Viruses, Mac doesn't allow you access to things that would potentially get viruses.  Oh, and this level of restriction often costs a lot more.

The good side of this is that Mac is easy to use, with all the software being okayed and approved by Apple, which makes the system foolproof.  This is a great feature for folks who really don't know anything about computers.  For all those people out there that are constantly clicking on bizarre adware (Oh that looks like a fun little flash game!) or keeps getting viruses or other malware (Oh, I can change my cursor to a picture of a kitty if I just click here?), Mac is indeed the way to go.

There's really nothing wrong with Mac at all- like anything else, there are benefits and drawbacks to Mac, PC and Linux, and you just have to find the one that works best for you.

I just like to rip on Macs here and there for the same reasons I always root for the visiting team in sports, or at least the opposite team that the majority of my friends are rooting for- it stirs things up and makes life more interesting!  Folks who use Macs are often people who had trouble with PC's, and so Mac appears great in their minds, and they sing the praises of Mac to anyone who will listen.  For those folks, I am glad they found something that works for them, but I already have what works for me.

Not that this helps Getpower in any way, I just didn't want this thread to be all about Mac bashing!

Mac’s are not immune against virus and other malware that is out there, it’s just that Windows still is the most used OS out there and it’s easier (and a lot more money) to make malware for Windows based computers. So therefore there are almost 0 nasty stuff out there for Mac’s I think that if more and more people start using OS from Apple then we will see Mac’s that are infected with all sort of nastiness. It seems like most people have forgotten that a computer virus is not the only threat out there.

Apple can only go so far in preventing virus and malware infection on Mac’s through okaying software that is sold through legitimate channels and they have no control over software and movies downloaded from torrent sites.  Is security through obscurity a good defense against malware? In the long run I don’t think so.

Oh, and this level of restriction often costs a lot more.

Apple product’s are overpriced since they are “trendy” and all the cool kids use Apple.

I just don't like the needed reliance on iTunes for Macs - it reminds me so much of having to use Microsoft's website (back in XP and before) days to see if your computer had any updates - too bad that the website itself was almost incapable of navigation. ::)

Aside from that, and their higher prices, Macs sure are pretty.

Kenneth, are you trying to say there are two sides on a coin?  Well, what's the good of that then?  :P

I don't use a Mac, but there are lots of people who do, and it works for them.  More power to them if they found something that works for them though.
