Just got a nice Tough Tool by Shrade. Interesting tool locking mechanism.

Reading review on MTO before trying to clean tool? Fail :(

Conclusion: It's sharp.

Anyone want to buy it?

Me too mate... not enjoying it much.

Anaesthetic numbed half my hand but not the important bit very much - interesting to say the least! It's now all wearing off along with the good pills so I'm taking more and going to bed :(

Morning guys..... I'm a tad sore to say the least :(

OK, so I would say it was 40/60 tools fault/my fault ratio!
What a bizarre locking system

I admitted already that if I had read the MTO review, I might have realised that trying to force the tools back in wasn't a good plan, but what I didn't realise is that there are only TWO locking tools on each side. You need one to release the other as the non-locking ones don't have the shape to lift to lock - see the review for the info here:

http://www.multitool.org/Miscellaneous-Tools/Large-Tools/2006/04/23/schrade-st1.html

What happened then?

I open all the tools on both sides to get a good soaking of WD40 in there for a clean. When I started cleaning each tool and closing it, I found myself stuck with the two locking ones open on each side and they wouldn't budge.

I eventually attempted to get the blade closed by wrapping it in a cloth and forcing it - that's where it all went wrong. It slashed the hell outta my finger when it clicked out of locked position. Then followed a lot of bleeding and HK playing nurse/paramedic/ambulance driver and then nurse again.

I had to have a nerve block in my knuckle which was horrible and has bruised up badly and I had a fairly nasty reaction to lidocaine too - nearly blacked out and threw up  :o
Couple of stitches (which I felt) later and I was off home again with my imaginary tail between my legs.

Back to the tool - can't provide pics today for obvious reasons!  ::)
It's a beautiful beast... truly unique and interesting. I actually think it's gorgeous, and although it's definitely built for bigger hands then mine, it feels very nice to handle.

The handles provide a nice hold with the tools fairly well out of the way and the pliers have a big strong bite. Their shape also means that you can probably reach in to things well too. The body has what appears to be a grey anodised finished? which makes it matt and grippy. Folded up it's big and butch and mine came with the original leather sheath which is also top quality and has a sturdy snap.

It's big, heavy and has sharp teeth.... yes, the Tough Tool is tough  :tu:

I seriously may to to sell it though as I'm now a bit afraid of it and will never use it  :ahhh

PS: We drive on the left here so my "driving finger" is on my right hand ;)

I am however left handed, so it's already proving to be a PITA.

Ouch!

Luckily, it's still attached... ;)

The locking mechanism isn't as weird as you'd think, when you consider what was around when they first came out.  The original SuperTool was the big boy then and this was Schrade's version of the same locking principle.

BTW, I loved the pliers on my Schrade (Craftsman) Tough Tool, and mine has the cool bit driver, but the blades are a strange handful to use when folded out.

Heal well and be the Master of the Schrade!

Good to hear you are ok- this has been my issue with the Schrade Tough Tool since I got my first one- the one in that review actually.  I had the same problem with the original Supertool, where I had the locking implements open and couldn't close them.  I had to get another tool and pry the lock back to release at least one tool so I could release the rest.  That's a big reason why I believe no one is using that kind of lock today.

You can't sell or trade that tool now- once you have shared blood with a tool, you have a bond with it, and it is yours forever!   >:D

Of course, if you'd gotten one of the current generation Chinese ones, chances are you wouldn't have been cut as I doubt they are that functional!  :P

Little update on Frankenfinger :D

A very grumpy nurse removed my stitches yesterday, well, she removed part of them and I had to inform her she had left the bit under the flesh... I love the NHS  ::)
After her inept fumblings finished, I was left with this pretty new scar:

Lost some feeling as expected and it's very sore indeed... a small reminder of my general inability to handle sharp things  :ahhh

Just remember:  Chicks dig scars.  :D

That's a pretty hefty suture they used.  Surprised they didn't use a thin proline stitch (plastic surgery like stuff) instead.  :-\

The nerve may very well heal completely normally.  That was a pretty sharp blade, so no tearing/crushing damage to the nerve sheath.

Good to hear/see you're on the mend :tu:
Looks like the troubles will all be over soon.

Know what you mean about the stitch removal though. I had an op on my hands as a kid and got (IIRC) 32 stitches in the process. They put the dissolvable type it - which didn't actually dissolve. They had to manually remove 31 of them (actually abandoned one which sorted itself out after a couple of weeks or so). I don't think I could have stitches done (or removed) without a general anaesthetic now ... wasn't fun ... especially not as a kid

So anyway, what's the next chapter in ... The Taming of the Schrade ??

Funnily I was just thinking about your finger this afternoon (after I had a very near miss with my own digit and a SAK), rough stitches aside that looks like it's been healing well. :tu:

I think the nerves will be OK too, just gonna take some time. Can't fully bend or extend it yet, so I'm still being very careful.

Not sure what to do about that bloody tool though!
