Rough Rider first impressions
on: March 02, 2011, 11:01:11 PM
Going through our UPS shipment today at my store, I found a package addressed to me  :mail:! My Rough Riders had arrived, and almost a week earlier than I'd expected (thanks, SMKW  :tu:)!  In it were four nice, shiny, new knives: A Barlow, a Congress, a Whittler, and a Canoe, all with yellow scales. Sorry I don't have any of my own pics, camera's down at the moment. Haven't had a chance to really play..er...use them responsibly yet, but I have to say that all four made a good overall first impression on me. All the blades ( that's 11 in total!) snap open and closed nicely. No nail-breakers here, but also no weak springs. All were nice and sharp right out of the box. maybe not shaving sharp in all cases, but very usable edges. The only noticeable F&F blemish is a very small gap maybe 1/2" long between the springs on the Congress. Even then, you really need to be looking to notice it. The yellow scales are nothing fancy, but look pretty nice in person. Can't wait to give each of them a workout around the house and store. The Barlow is in my pocket as I'm typing this. Overall, very nice, especially for the price!

jerseydevil,

Nice grabs, the Rough Riders make great EDC slippies. The quality of them, overall, usually exceeds their modest price. Despite where they are made the quality is fairly consistant on them as well. I own dozens of Rough Riders and only some have any noticable faults, and even these are fairly minor.

They do a good heat treat on the 440A stainless they use and their edge holding is about on par with the 420HC both Case and Queen use in their knives.

Rough Riders are rather good bang for the buck IMHO  Very good users (which means I don't care to use it to the point that the blade might break ::) :D ) Use them in good health man :D

Good grab the rough riders.  I quite like mine and carry them around often.
I'm looking forward to the large toothpick coming in the mail.

The 5" closed ones? They are the only RR I have, a bit too large for EDC, almost feels like a folding fillet knife.

Yes one of those 5 inch jobs.  :)  Wanted the longer blade for lunch prep.

So I carried the Barlow today at work, using it to open boxes, cut wrapping on pallets, etc (I HATE razor box cutters!). It did everything I needed it to do cleanly and efficiently, didn't need to visit the stone I keep in the back room. Still damn sharp! It's big enough to be usable, but small enough that I hardly noticed it in my pocket. Overall very happy with it. Definitely have a winner here, folks. Next up is the canoe!

So, edge retention sounds pretty good.  Do these RR's have stainless or carbon steel blades?

According to the markings on the blades, they use 440A stainless.

NutSAK,

All of their slippies thus far are bladed in 440A stainless. But, they do have a lockback folder out now that uses a San Mai carbon steel Damascus for it's blade and bolsters........and they are really nice and priced right.

I did a review of mine here: http://forum.multitool.org/index.php/topic,22658.0.html
