My first knife
on: March 11, 2011, 11:42:31 AM

Well how many of you can say you still have your first knife?

This is what I believe was my first knife from many years ago. From memory I got this at a local town show and it was either in a ‘Chips’ (potato chips/snacks) based showbag or I may have got it off a stand selling all sorts of things, I cant really remember if it was my own purchase or my parents bought it for me either. I only really thought about it the other day and was surprised to realise I had this as a kid and amazingly still have it today. From time to time I still carry it, usually inside my wallet and it’s been used for all sorts of things. It’s a bit blunt and I’ve never sharpened it. It has a really good snap to it  and is a bit better than my Alox Rambler! I’m sure it has to be just a cheap chinese knife. There is a logo on the blade but I can’t really see what it represents

It measures 54mm closed and 96mm open. It has red anodized aluminium scales and feels like it has a slight 90 deg lock on the blade too. The blade is almost exactly the same size as a Vic 58mm.

I have been looking around for similar sized single blade knives like this but haven’t been able to find anything like it yet. An Alox 58mm SAK is just not the same.

I have lost this knife so many times and then I’ve stumbled across it a few years later in the bottom of a drawer or something like that. Since I really only realised the importance of this knife as it is my first knife I’m going to make sure I look after it and not loose it now.

I recently got a couple Wenger standard issues and they kind of give me the same vibe but on a larger scale because of the bail.

If anyone knows where you can buy really small single or 2 bladed ‘Alox’ scaled key chain knives like this then I would be interested. I’ve tried looking on ebay but didn’t find much or really how to search for a knife like this. I think they are almost called a ‘novelty knife’ I really like the red colour. I just wish that red Alox SAK’s were easy to find.

Anyway that’s my story.

Sorry about poor photo. That was the best out of about 20 tries.

Well i have had it from about the mid to late 80's, im not sure exactly but its was probably made some time well before i got it. Im pretty sure  i can remember finding it in a showbag. I think it also had some kind of clip on it too. One of those little gate or lobster type clips. I was trying to get a pic to show the red colour better.

Good story, maybe something like a Wenger eloxy model (not of course alox and a bit bigger..) would fit the bill, or a victorinox classic alox (only one blade but you get scissors, a screwdriver and a nail file)

This thread got me to thinking, my first memory of a knife was about the age of 12 in 1972. I was exploring along the Boise River in downtown Boise Idaho USA. Back then the river was still fish-able and some what pristine, not so much any more. As I was throwing rocks into the water along the shore I looked down and saw, what looked to me to be a very big knife. At 12 years old any knife bigger than a pocket knife looked big. There was Old Timer fixed blade in a leather sheath laying amongst the rocks. The first thing I did was look around for a fisherman or some one that may have left their knife laying on the shore of the river. Well no one was in sight so I was off with my new find. After showing the Old Timer to my parents I got the go ahead to keep it. With a word of caution not to cut myself. It was the first knife I took deer hunting unfortunately it has never seen any action hunting. But it has cleaned a quite few fish. As you can see it has not been well cared for, age has taught me to take better care of my knives.
