Buck Stockman
on: March 03, 2011, 07:13:59 PM
I decided its time I tried something new in the Slip joint pocket front . I've only ever done SAKs and the odd British Army knife . The Buck Stockman caught my eye and so I decided to do a little research . It appears they do two different models , the 301 which is made in the U.S and the 371 which is alot cheaper and made in China , both are the same style and blade config .
I really wasn't expecting the out come of these reviews and I was very surprised . I'll let you judge for yourself . Guess which model I've gone for ?

Which scales did you get for yours?  AFAIK, they come in synthetic yellow bone scales, nylon/plastic scales, and my personal favorite, dymondwood wood/plastic scales. :tu:

It's rather obvious isn't it?  I mean, after you realized that the Chinese version is no good for castrating a cow, I'm sure you went with the US version with the proper spey blade.  :D

I have a 371 that I bought a couple of years ago at Wal-Mart for around $20. I carry it occasionally, great knife. The F&F are great, holds a great edge. Granted, I've never tried to castrate a cow with it.....

I just can't get over hoe quick it came . I ordered it at 16.55 yesterday and it came today  :o so I'll say welldone http://www.heinnie.com/   very good service  :tu:  And very nice it is too    Fit and finish is even better then I thought and this little knife is well worth the money . I've always liked Bucks big folders and this is the first time I've tried one of their slipjoints .For the first time in around 20 years I'm going to have something different then Victorinox as my main EDC  :o and if it goes well I may look at other similar knives by Case etc.  :D

Sory for the poor quality photos  :-[  Heres it is with my Buck 110 as a size comparison .

I have a Camillus built 301 which belonged to my grandfather.  I love it and carry it on occasion.  I'm wanting to get a new 301 in their Comfort care line with yellow scales.

BTW-Do we need a course on bovine anatomy?  One does not castrate a cow. ???

Here is a few 301 "single blade" knives Buck made last year as a build out. Buck only produce 50 of each of these (tang stamped) 301's. These were a trial run as this year Buck came out with the model 302 that is a single blade Stockman.

Hi,

I bought all four of the buildup 301/302's for my collection.  Liked them so much that the 302's are now in my group along with several where I bought two of each (one for the collection and one for EDC).  Currently carrying a dymondwood 302.  Awesomely sharp.

Looking forward to the Buck 306's which released around March 15th.  They will be a nice compliment to my Buck 305S collection.

Cheers - Joe

I have there large stockman wood handles china made and I truely like it. I carried it everyday for about a month, then another slippie throw a fit so I decided to give it some carry time. Dang knives act like a bunch of kids figting over pocket/carry/edc time. :D

Even though I had been a longtime fan of Buck Knives I never really got into their slippies until fairly recently. To try them out I found a older Camillus made 301........

I really like this one. I then decided to get some newer Buck made 301's as well as a import 371.....

These 3 proved to be a disappointment as all three have F&F issues, particularly the 2 Buck made 301's. I was quite surprised by this and if it weren't for the fact that I got them so cheap I would of just sent them back. Anyway, I have seen and handled flawless versions of all of these so I know I just got unlucky with mine. Haven't bought any new ones since but I have had my eye on them new 302 Solitares.

That being said there is one I have that I bought a while back that is by far, to me, the best slippie to ever come from Buck, the Camillus-built 307 Wrangler Large Stockman........

The big boy! You guys that really like Buck slippies, if you don't have one of these try to find one. They are well worth it.
