One Piece Wrench
on: March 20, 2011, 11:20:59 AM
Hi all,

Neglecting the weight, size, other functions etc., which of these "One Piece Wrench" design is structured to perform its function (grip vs range) best?

- Atwrench/Metwrench (PocketToolX; Atwood's FunnyBone, Prybabies etc.)

- PocketWrench II

- PalmPal/Titanium EDC Guitar (From EDCForum)

- SwissTech Micro-Slim

Any other "One Piece Wrench" (closed ended) that you guys knew? Please share!  Thanks.
You never know it is there until you need it.

I love Atwoods, but the Pocketwrench has got to be one of the best value tools out there. It's also more able to handle metric and imperial unlike a lot of other tools.

The accurate MTO answer is, get one of each :D

The PocketWrench is most versatile, as Nuph said, because it can be used on both Metric and Standard sizes.  The tradeoff is, you are more likely to marr the finish of the nut, due to the design (teeth biting in).

Atwood has made a tool called a Funnybone which has metric on one end and standard on the other.  One lived on my farm keychain for a long time, until I swapped on a Croconut.

Thanks guys!

I luv Atwoods too but the prices of some of his tools have skyrocketed on ebay and other forums; too high in my opinion to be used as a regular tool.  They're more of a collectible item for fans of one piece tool.

I agreed on your points on the PocketWrench and hence I am currently in favor of the SwissTech Micro-Slim as it can handle both English & Metric sizes as well. Hmmm, I guess there is no harm for me to buy these two to try out since both of them are quite value for $$.  :D

If you can catch Peter's sales from his blog, the prices are not too bad, but the aftermarket is brutal.

Peter's tools have functionality and fit that are unparalleled

The pockettoolX Piranha is a great tool, I really like that it has the open ended wrench on one side, and still has both metric and standard. I only wish you could choose which system to have the open ended part on when you bought it, but it's a really great design, a little pricey though, especially compared to the pocketwrench II, which I've heard is really great also

Owning and using both a Piranha and a PW-II, I've come to the conclusion that nothing beats a good 'ole 4'' adjustable wrench. :-\

Well, yes and no.   Adjustable wrenches suffer from clearance issues, especially on machinery.  The Atwoods are very good second bests to a dedicated set of box end/ring spanners/wrenches.  The PWII is pretty good too, if you're willing to accept "chewed" on nuts.  :ahhh

Have I chewed the corners off nuts with my PWII? Once or twice, but becuase it is so much slimmer than a proper wrench, there is enough corner for the real thing of a socket to grab later on in my experience. The biggest use I find for it is holding nuts while turning the bolt on the other end. That being said, it is small and light and useful enough that I do EDC one of mine.

Agreed.  Very useful tool.  Especially to fix a nut while turning a bolt.

I use a small ViseGrip for the same purpose, too.

Oi!  That's a nice one!

Hold on to that.  I get the feeling Peter isn't going to be making card tools any longer, so that one's a keeper.

Let us know what you think of it after you've had a chance to use it some.  :)

Yes you are right. I don't think he will be making any more card tools, at least not in the near future. Nevertheless, I will still edc it in my wallet, but will never use it unless absolutely necessary!
