Case repair
on: March 21, 2011, 09:47:08 PM
I received the 1970 Case small coke bottle I recently bought off ebay.  The knife is unused, and even prettier in person than in the seller's pictures.  However, the main blade has excessive lateral play, to the point that I would call it "slop".  I have contacted Case customer support through email to see if it would be possible for them to tighten the pivot, while ensuring that the knife is not replaced in the process.

I was just wondering if any of you have used Case CS, and could comment on your experience.

NutSAK,

Of the couple hundred Case knives I own I've not yet had to use their CS for anything. That said, over the years on forums such as these I have read over many a experience others have had with Case's CS department and I can not recall any problems. Matter of fact, many that I remember seemed to be that case went above and beyond in some instances.

That said, if and when you do send it in to Case makes sure you are very clear about what you want done and what you don't. It seems some times on older knives they do a refurb on them, buff and polish, resharpen, things like this. If you want anything to stay the way it is make sure they know. Just to be on the safe side.

NutSAK,

All fine and good but it doesn't really answer your question very well. I suggest getting a confirmation from an actual person. Have you tried calling them?

Due to the limited nature of their warranty and the age of your knife I don't know if blade play in your situation will be covered fully by the warranty......regardless of it's apparent unused condition. It would be something I would try to find out. Regardless, the cost would be minimal.

Either way though, if you send your knife in be sure to send along a note detailing specifically what you want done and what you don't.

Well, since it states that I can refuse replacement, I'm just going to send it in and see what they'll do.  My hope is that they'll see that it's unused, realize that the blade slop is a defect in workmanship, and will fix it.  They mention blade replacement...  If they're willing to remove a pivot pin to replace a blade, surely they're willing to tighten one up.

Oh, most definitely. They will tighten it up no problem, easy fix actually. You could do that one yourself although you might get a raised pin that will need to be buffed down. Anyway, the thing will be whether or not they charge you for it.

I guess we will see.

I see--I misunderstood what you meant.  I'll bet they won't charge me for it.  If I do, I would still be ahead from accepting a current-production "replacement", I figure.
