pocketknife for Travel in Great Britain
on: March 22, 2011, 01:41:00 AM
I have a very good friend who will be attending a class at Oxford this year.  He is like me and always has a knife in his pocket.  What would be a nice, small, legal "gentleman's" knife for him?  He's planning on bringing one in his checked luggage.  Would a small Opinel be Ok?  Are all locking blades out?

I'm thinking maybe an Alox Soldier or Pioneer.

Thanks in advance for the help.

For general EDC a sub-3" slip joint is about it, so a SAK or traditional folder is normally the way to go.  Like many University's around the world I suspect Oxford will have something to say about what's OK or not on their grounds, best to have your friend check with them.

Are you allowed any kind of locking blade in England?  Is this universal for Europe (Italy, Greece?).

No universal law in Europe, each country has it's own legislation.  As to the UK, yes you are allowed locking blades but you need a specific reason to be carrying one; so a part of your job or hobby (camping etc) for example.  Same goes for fixed blades.  Good thread here:

So I own plenty of locking knives and MT's (plus quite a few fixed blades) I just need a specific reason to have one on me.  So no problem with carrying a Vic Spirit at work (I'm a maintenance guy) or a bushcraft knife while out wild camping.

Many thanks for the information.  I will advise my friend to check with Oxford and send him the link
