What are your opinions on Tilley hats?
on: May 21, 2011, 09:48:59 PM
Summer is here! And I need a good hat to keep my head cool. Today we had 30°C/86°F in the shade and that's just the starters. When real summer comes it's going to be HOOOT. I've been looking into Tilleys for some time now, read some great stories of their CS but would like to know what you guys and gals think of them and what your experiences are with them. What do you feel is the best of them, I've been thinking of T3, TH4 and LTM6, most probably the last one.Pics of you wearing the hats would be nice too. To se how they look after some wear.  :D Thanks

I have at hemp th4 and it is the best hat I have owned. I've had it about 18 months and wear it a lot, but no signs of wear. Handy that it is machine washable. The double strap is very effective when it is windy and I've never had it blow off, which I've found a problem with other wide brimmed hats in the past. Being able to get exactly the right size is also a major bonus as the so called one size fits all , or s, m, l never seems to give me a good fit. I preferred the look of the the TH4 to the LTM6 as I felt the mesh arround the top looked at bit unusual, but it will certainly make it more breathable. Anyway, I would recommend a Tilley any day.

I'm on my third- I wear them out every 4-5 years but Tilley replaces them, so you have a hat for life.  Here I am with #2:

I also just bought my father a Tilley for his birthday and he likes it.  It's an airflow model, and he likes it so far, but then he's only had it a couple of days.  It really is the best hat in the world.  There are a number of other members here that wear Tilleys, so don't just take my word for it!

No multitool, but I did have a Wenger Backpacker that day, as you can see in the full article:

I am a CHEAP guy but I would honestly pay full price for a Tilley.
I own two (I did till I misplaced one) both were gifts from the Mrs.

Of course this is one more thing that I blame Def for :pok:

I've heard nothing but great things about Tilleys. I've checked them out in shows and stores, came soooo close to getting one.

when I grow up (joke here) I will definitely get one!

for now I got a less expensive Seattle Sombrero which also has a life time warranty (just not as puur-dy).

Yea, Def is responsible for quite a few addictions.  Just you wait though, I'll have him addicted to Saddleback Leather before you know it!

As for the Tilley, I love them and am dying to have one, but my wife keeps giving me the evil eye when we're in cabelas and I grab for one.  It's not the cost, she has no say in what I spend on my toys( just let me think that guys  :-\ ) , but she can't stand the way they look.  I don't know why, I think they look pretty cool!  I will end up with one, and she will just have to get used to it(meaning I'll need it to hide under when she makes me sleep in the rain).

I have had a T3 for awhile now and I love it..I changed out the hatstring for something I liked a bit better and stashed a folded up Bandanna in the "Secret Pocket"..Very Happy with the Hat..It has kept my head dry in the Rain and with a Bandanna tied on my head reasonably Warm in the Winter...Back in Febuary I even had said hat on while participating in the Polar Plunge for Special Olympics..Despite the Frigid Temperatures and a complete submersion the hat dried out quickly..The only times I am not wearing it is at work due to a new company policy about headwear or while engaged in a really grungy activity

Everyone blames me for these things now a days. I'm used to it.

My father lives in the middle of nowhere and can't be bothered with anything less than the best because he has nowhere to replace or repair something- at least not easily.

I can't wear hats. The love machine that I am requires solar energy.

I love my T3 BUT I find it quite warm in really hot weather, so you might be better with one of your other choices.  YMMV though.

Here I am modelling mine at the UK meet-up. :D

That's the style I am looking for.  What model is yours Grant?

Given my lack of hair and the amount I am outdoors these days, I need something to protect my solar panel as well as my ears.

I only know of one place locally to get Tilley hats, and they don't keep much range in stock.

But, the girl there is cute as you like, so I'm happy for the excuse to go ask her to look at a catalogue :D

By their website, some of their other stuff looks nice too. And a jacket guaranteed not to wear out? That sounds like a challenge!

I like my Tilly LT5, you can throw it in a suitcase or pack and squish it down and it comes
back up to form quickly for wear.
I also have a Lonix field hat which sports a bit larger brim and it though is made of Canvas,
I enjoy wearing it as well.

I'll probably wait 2-3 weeks on mine so to let me know how it looks on a real person, not a model :D

Nope, I have no pictures of him wearing it, but I'll email my Mom and see if we can rectify that!  They left this morning, so I can't do it myself.

Grant might correct me here, but I'm pretty sure that's a T3.  Same as mine, I just didn't have the sides fastened up in my pics.

I'm not much for correcting folks on Tilley Hats as I'm not really well versed in the various models.  Mine is however a T3, the original Tilley Hat without the colored under brim.  Initially I owned a white one (which now belongs to Whoey's sister) but when it needed to be replaced the store only had grey ones in stock, so I switched to grey.  My third one is also grey, since the store insisted on replacing it with an identical one.  So, grey has been my thing for a few years now, and I don't really mind, although I have been tempted to buy another white one... and the green ones are nice too.... :D

Well crap.  I went and sized my head and I will likely be ordering one soon.  $76 bucks isn't bad for a hat that is essentially a companion for life.  You guys suck, you take such great pictures and make me want everything!

BTW, how accurate is the sizing on these things?

I've only ever heard good things about Tilley ... and not just the hats. Personally though if I'm wearing something on my head it'll be a Buff or a Barmah ... specifically Sundowner Roo. I've also only heard good stuff about Real Deal recycled hats and have been rather tempted for a while.
There, that's ruffled it up a little  :D Even more options to add to the selection dilemma

If anyone in the UK fancies buying themselves a Real Deal hat in my size and then getting bored with it very quickly - give me a shout  :tu:

Pretty accurate- plus a Tilley reforms to your head.  Wash it (you need to wash it often anyway) then try it on.  Stretch it over your knee then try it on again.  Keep this up until you have a comfortable size.
