Pocketwrench, Piranah, Spanner...
on: June 25, 2011, 03:51:30 PM
I'm looking for some pocket wrenches... Was looking at Piranah long time, and at Pocketwrench 2...

There are some issues with both of them. Piranah has metric and ISO side, and metric is closed one (not open jaw). Being in old continent I have virtually no use of any ISO sized wrench. So lets go to PocketWrench 2, well it looks great to me, but it have one flaw. Closed jaws, so you need to have good acess to nut/bolt and go "over" it....

Looking arround for some other solutions  I came across this one:

http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Tools/Wrenches/ESP_Multi_Spanner.html?tab=Pictures#details

Open jaws, metric, slightly bended, so you can get to those nuts/bolts close to large flat surfaces... Slight downside is that you have one side for tightening and other side for loosing, but.... Compromises must be made...

Now I know it's made for guitar and music instruments, so my issue with this one is it's strenght?? Any one have any experience?

I think that this one and PW2 would work great together...

P.S. PLease don't start with Atwoods, they are GREAT, but even Piranah is a bit pricey for me...  :D :D

I really agree with you.  The closed wrenches are far more limited than the open ended alligator style wrench.  There are just not too many nuts that have that sort of wide open clearance around it.  In your case, I think Atwoods wouldn't be a cure-all since most of his wrenches are ISO (standard) sizes.

I like that guitar tool, but it seems pretty thin and therefore would tend to rip through the corners of a truly torqued down nut.

Two things come to mind:
1. One of the Wengers with the Alligator wrench (really nice for smaller nuts)
2. CRKT Guppie.  It's a pretty good tool, although it won't open wider than a 12mm nut. (I think)

Well, 2 other things come to mind, but they're not really in keeping with the MT.O spirit... ::)

1. 4 inch long Crescent wrench
2. Small size Visegrip (or LM Crunch)

I forgot to let you know on the pocketwrench, I got one for $15 shipped, it's still in the mail though. As for other options, the guitar is the only other that comes to mind. They come in eighter imperial or metric, made out of titanium, look cool,... :D they have the closed wrench design too though. they were $55 form the edcf store but Jon doesn't have them anymore, just the imperial ones. Maybe on the secondary market.
