PPPs and Toolclips
on: July 16, 2011, 01:41:24 AM
OK so regular readers will have gathered that I've bought myself a PPP,and a Micro tool clip :mail:.So heres a few thoughts on them.

Firstly I had thought I was buying an S44,turns out it was an S45,the Deluxe :D

The general consensous on the forum about the PPP is its a Marmite tool, either you love it or hate it,and having had a couple of days use I can see why.Yes the tools clump, yes there is a a bit of give in the lateral if you applying torque to something, and yes just like the LM PST,you can smurf your hand applying preasure with the pliers....but I do really like it...cant explain exactly why,but I enjoy using it.Its had a test drive at work, and surprise surprise, the LM Bladeless Fuse spent a second day at home, and will have another day off tomorrow! And soon as there will be a set of hex bits being bought for it(any suggestions on a sheet to carry the PPP and its Bits are very welcome.

Again lots has been said about the MTC,and all I can add is to say its a fair alternative to a SAK or a smaller LM Juice. Its a fun wee thing, inovative design, and and idea little tool
There is no beginning,or ending, and for this we are thankful, cos now is hard enough to understand!

I've no experience with the Micro Tool Clip, but I do have an S44 PPP. I love it too despite inside access and clumping. Oddly enough I don't find it that uncomfortable when using the pliers, probably as you don't need to apply as much pressure to the pliers, but then I've only used them for puling not tightening.

Can't help you with a sheath though mate, I carry mine on a P7 suspension clip

Sadly I've fallen on the other side of the debate.  :-\  I love the pliers but the internal tools just don't come up to scratch for me and I ended up almost never carrying the thing.  The shame is that I really wanted to like it, I just don't. :(

It's wierd - I'm like that on the Powerlock, a tool that big feels like it should be accessorised with equally brutal tools (plus theres the added faff factor of the crappy flappy covers), but on the PPP it seems to work for me very well. I really like the awl that SOG makes, I like the fact that there are no plain flat drivers that just waste space IMO, and as mentioned before - I always have a dedicated folding knife so don't need to be faffing to get the blade out. Pity there's no scissors (yet) though.

I suppose a tool either gels with you or it doesn't - I know you're a big fan of another inboard clumping tool Gareth which I want to like but which I'm (so far) just not connecting with. Even though the PPP is less ergonomic and missing a couple of great tools on the other, it just "feels" better for me - and I'm not convinced I know why :-\

Absolutely.  There's a definite (and I hate to use the phrase) 'X Factor' to some multi's that means they either work for you, or they don't.

OK I was just having to fix a drawer front from a bit of Ikea furniture and, because of this thread, I though I'd use my PPP to tighten up the fasteners.  OUCH!  The gears really are uncomfortable.  I still love the pliers and the sheath, but the rest has just left me cold. :-\

Sound like you need a PT-510. I wonder why SOG wasn't added gear covers to the PPP.

Has the PT-510 got the same asymetrical pliers? Still non-locking?
An identical frame/pliers with gear covers would be very nice

if only there was a website full of reviews on various MT's doing a nice comparison between the PPP and the PT-510.

Hooray for people with more sense than me  :D :D :D (there's just so many)  :salute:  :salute:
That PT logo on the plier heads reminds me of Dangermouse (Probably not relevant to those outside the UK) :D :D :D

 I think I feel a purchase coming on  :-[

My PPP failed me today... well actually it was my fault. First time I'd used the driver on the bottle opener, well any of the drivers actually, but I couldn't open a 13A plug to change the fuse at my brother's house ... the split ring I'd put on to take the suspension clip was too big and the tool wouldn't turn within the prongs

Now fixed - and I wasn't tormented by the gears either (but I still want a DM-510 PT-510  :D )
