Good quality headphones that work WITH glasses?
on: July 14, 2011, 04:56:48 AM
I wear glasses.  That poses a problem because I can't find a set of headphones that give good quality audio reproduction without forcing me to leave my glasses off when I listen to music.

Does anyone know of any Sennheiser or Grado headphones that don't kill your glasses when you wear them?

I used studio headphones for a long time to block out noisy co-workers, but I couldn't wear them for long stretches before they became uncomfortable. I've used earbuds to address this problem, but I'm not enough of an audiophile to tell you if there are any out there to meet your standards.

I've used earbuds in the past, but my issue with those is that they don't tend to stay in. :/  Over-the-ear headphones don't help too much, either, due to the fact my ears stick out. :D

I'm just a difficult customer, I think. :D

I had a pair of sony that has a memory foam like bud, it stays in pretty well. Dunno about sound quality though, not an audiophile.

You said "good" quality, good being a subjective term in the audio world as I'm sure you are aware.  Kind of like, "which is a good multitool...?"

That said, my Senn PX 100's fit my definition of good and they also fit comfortably over my eyeglasses.

I much prefer my Koss PortaPro's though.  They are better then the Senn PX 100's imo and are in the same price range.  They also fit very comfortably over glasses.  If you get these, google the simple Kramer mod and quarter mod to really open them up and even out the bass a bit.  Good luck.

Um... might have to narrow it down a bit.  Do you want over the ear headphones?  On-ear headphones?  Earbuds?  In ear monitors (canal phones)?

Jekostas:  No real preference; I'm just looking for something that offers good sound reproduction that won't kill my head within ten minutes of putting them on, and also won't prematurely wear the ear pieces of my glasses by forcing them into my skull. :D

Parmenides:  They don't have to be top-of-the-line; I'm thinking about something that won't break the bank, but that also won't break within a couple years. :tu:

Thank you for all of your suggestions, too, I'll look them over when I get a chance. :)

Well, if you don't mind in-ear monitors (the type that have the earpiece pushed in to your ear), there's a massive range of good quality phones that can be had for under $50.  Meelectronics M6 and the Soundmagic PL50 come to mind, as well as the (gasp) high-end Apple dual-driver headphones.

The advantage of in-ears is that the sound quality is improved by the driver being so close to your eardrum, so they're easier to make of good quality.

I use Sennheiser HD 555's with my glasses just about every day, sometimes for hours on end. Never caused me any amount of discomfort.
