What AAA should I buy?
on: July 23, 2011, 01:52:13 PM
Hi, I lost my itp a3 upgraded with the new L-M-H UI last week. I have a bunch of AAA flashlights to keep me busy, but I miss that one. I'm thinking about getting a SS this time but am not shure what the UI on the SS ones is. Did they change it too? The colored ones still have the M-L-H. The other flashlight I've been thinking of is the DQG Tiny ver.2. I have the original one, but the UI on it got messed up with some use as the spring lost it's tension, so it's more of a one mode light now. How does the new interface hold up? Is there any other AAA multi mode SS I should look at in the cca $30 range? The Revo is a bit out of my range at the moment.
Thanks.

I have an SS A3, it has M-L-H interface. Very durable light that rides with my keys.

I believe the SS version was also upgraded to L-M-H, but you need to shop carefully as there are still many olders ones about.
If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck.

Looks like you have a handle on what's out there unless you want to make a bigger change.  If you know about the iTP then you are aware of the Maratac, and I can't remember what sequance that is, but I think it is M-L-H still (which is actually what I prefer).

The DQG II looks very interesting and I want one just because of it's size, but I've been buying too many lights again recently so I have skipped that one for now.

You can watch the WTS forum on the cpf marketplace and maybe pick up the Revo SS at a good price.  I really like it, but because of the L-M-H sequence I don't use it on a keychain.  It is a VERY nice light though.

For a biger change, look at the Fenix E05 for the keychain... very nice, and simple for near field keychain light.  This one is very good if you also EDC a larger light, or for the person that needs just a little extra light sometimes and a dead simple interaface.  A great Gift light.

I do like my SS A2 (L-M-H) probably my most used torch.  Another I've just been looking at is the Klarus Mi-X6, looks like it might be M-L-H though.

I know of Klarus, I've been looking at their mi10 model, the revo look-a-like. I think I read somewere they are actualy a 47 subcontractor for the revo.

I have a black alu ITP A2, currently on the way to warrenty service. It started acting up. I find it too big for pocketcarry though. I prefer AAAs. I have 3 fenix E01s, a solitaire with a led upgrade, 2 tank007 703s, a peak matterhorn, a DQG Tiny ver1 and a red ITP a3, but am searching for a SS L-M-H one. I've grown accustom to that UI, as most often the low setting is all I need.

Francis, thanks for the advice, I'll keep an eye out on cpf marketplace. There are often great prices there.

I do carry a bigger 47 aa2 tactical in my bag, but I like small multimode lights. I kow of the maratac, the brass one looks nice, but they are almost 20usd more expecive than the itp form the only place where i can get them, endtimesreport, and you don't get much exept rougher knurling and a different keycain attachment.

Got the DQG II a few days ago and I'm very impressed with it's size.  It has a few rough edges, but it's a really nice light because of it's very small size.  If it was high first, and low second it would be so perfect.

Olight is re-incorporating their subsidiary iTP into the parent.  They are coming out with updated version of the new lights that sport a nice new screw mounted pocket clip and can now tailstand like the Maratac version.  I've always prefered the Maratac version of this light, but I have a couple iTP as well in AAA. I cut the keychain attachment off one to make a really short light at one time.  I think the anodizing on the Maratac and the fact that they always had the new models in SS or what ever first.  I'm not big on Black, and the Maratac finish seemed tougher.  The new updated iTP (Olight i series) though looks quite nice and the price stays roughly the same.

Thanks for the heads up on these. I haven't been around on forums lately, missed that one. I haven't bought anything yet but this looks interesting. The pocketclip is MUCH better, the old one popped of too easily. I hope they make it in SS too.

BTW. for others reading this, here's the announcement on CPFMP

 does this mean 47, Olight and ITP are the same company now?

ITP and O-Light were the same company, just different brand segments.  I'm guessing ITP wasn't selling enough to justify 2x the branding, packaging, promotion etc.  Unfortunately, that means the great SA-series ITP lights are history.  Get 'em while you can.

As for 4Sevens, different company but they have an official development and technology sharing agreement with O-Light.  The company CEOs also sit on each other executive boards (executive boards are responsible for hiring, firing and evaluating CEOs).

Very true.  Superb lights IMO, I love my SA2 I'm very sad to hear of their demise.  :(

Ok, since I started this thread I bought two stainless steel AAA flashlights. An older model R2 Fenix LD01 from Francis and a new R5 iTP A3. Both have their pros and cons. The main con though for the LD01 would be its beam profile, too much throw, and not enough flood, especially compared to the itp's beam.

The ITP has it beat on that aspect but the threads, oh the threads on the ITP's are such a hit and miss. This is my 5th ITP (4xA3 and 1xA2), 3 of them had ok threads, and 2 of them were terrible, very hard to operate one handed, even after a thorough clean up and lube. Regretfully, this one was the bad one. The fenix threads, well they're just perfect, sooth as butter. I hope o-light fixed that threads on the new i-series.
