Cabelas PST bombing?
on: January 05, 2008, 02:11:59 AM
I guess they are not selling many of these to drop $50 in such a short time. http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/product/standard-item.jsp?_DARGS=/cabelas/en/common/catalog/item-link.jsp_A&_DAV=MainCatcat20712-cat20895_TGP&id=0043232517658a&navCount=4&podId=0043232&parentId=cat20895&masterpathid=&navAction=push&catalogCode=7IS&rid=&parentType=index&indexId=cat20895&hasJS=true

When I was on Vacation I took a couple of loads as a favor for a friend to the new Cabellas they are building in Scarboro Maine. I had been given an employee discount card for the job with 20% off all purchases. If this goes down any more by the time I am going back up in april any one want one? I actually just might bite on this. :ahhh

I just don't see the attraction of the PST after owning a Core and Vic Spirit now, but this is a special-edition gold-etched PST so it may increase in value years from now. BTW, I can't wait for the new Cabela's they're building here in NJ. It'll be right by Giants Stadium and will be a friggin' HUGE Cabela's. I better start saving.  :D

When I was quoted a price of well over $100 for one in the store, I was stunned.  It reminded me of my pocket knife collecting days where adding some fancy lettering and a serial number could more than quadruple the asking price for an otherwise unspectacular knife.

Huge isnt the word they are building a 33 acre pond so people can test drive the boats.

Not to mention the amount of fill that was needed for this place. he delivered 8 loads a day and was doing this for 6 months. Now every load was 20 ton thats a crapload of dirt! :ahhh

I think part of the problem is that the PST isn't really old enough and hasn't been out of production long enough to really garner a huge following that is clamoring for an exotic release. Couple this with the fact that real multi-tool aficiandos with large income to drop so much on a collector's item are fairly rare and you get sluggish sales. Leatherman had to gussy up their high end models with super steels and titanium to get widespread sales at 90+ price points, I had a hard time believing many would pay 150$ for the lowly PST, despite the added features.

Part of me does wish these were sold at BassPro instead, I just found out my sister's current boyfriend works there and gets a 40% discount on everything storewide. I would pick one up in a heartbeat if it was 60$, instead I'm trying to save for some Surefire flashlights and a quite a few tools to flesh out my collection.

Didn't one of our regulars have some problems with the Gold inlaying on his model?

The original $150 price was out-of-line on these tools. The handles are dated from 2004, the year the PST was discontinued. Blades and plier heads are from that same era, not made with the "original" 1980's tooling. Basically, one gets the impression that they simply used up a bunch of leftover parts, then applied a fancy logo on the side. :-\

That being said, Leatherman did a nice job on them. The logo is laser-etched, and the gold lettering is real gold inlay. No problem with flaking on mine. And the form fitted case is a nice touch too. The $150 price was too high, but $99 ain't bad.
In order to be certain of having the right tool for every job.........one must first acquire a lot of tools
