My first power tool (DeWalt drill) died
on: August 20, 2011, 05:06:56 AM
Well, it's officially toast. The 12 volt cordless DeWalt drill/driver that I bought brand new in 2004, and have used hard ever since, has officially burnt up its motor. This was the first power tool I ever bought. I talked to the people at the DeWalt repair shop and for the cost of rebuilding the entire drill I could buy a new and better DeWalt. Their 20 volt line is coming out in the fall, so I've got my eye on those. 2004 - 2011. Sad to see the old thing go.

On a related note, if anyone needs a DeWalt charger that can do 12, 14.4 and 18 volt ni-cad batts, let me know.  :)

That's sad, sorry to hear it.  Nothing worse than losing a faithful and reliable tool.

But hey, now you have a legitimate excuse to buy the best one they have out!

i thought when i bought it my 19.2 volt 3/8 Craftsman drill was gonna be mediocre. The thing has really surprised me doing light to moderate construction at work. 3 years and still going strong. My Ryobi is a big disappointment ...sorry battery life.

My black and decker was great until some jacksmurf stole the dang charger from my garage.  They also took my Makita angle grinder and ryobi circular saw.  They left my Skil miter saw though, weird.

I'd leave the Skil too!   :D

I've replaced 2 motors in my old 18v DeWalt. You can get the motors here-

They have the old and new style motors. If yours was bought in 2004 I think it's the $30 new style motor.

My Dad still has (and uses) his 80's super noisy Black and Decker drill.  Still works like a charm, too.  Shame about the color.

Brilliant! Silly me just trusted the guy at the repair shop, I didn't even consider looking for a new motor.

I salute you sir  :salute:  :drink:

No problem.  :salute: Just be sure to take your old motor out and make sure it looks like the one your order. Also, if you're in the mood for a crazy mod, there are a number of high power R/C car motors that will fit in there.  :o

wow, 7 years is pretty good, especially if you used it a lot  :tu:

the new Lithium ones are pretty sweet. I got a Makita 18v last "Black-Friday" for like 80 bucks (normally almost 200) that I luv!

lighter, more power/torque, holds a charge longer and way faster in the re-charging. People pick up my newest drill and think it's a toy! lol
judge others by how they treat those they are allowed to mistreat

I picked up this a few months ago. It's so cute and tiny I want to make a kydex IWB holster for it and carry it concealed.  :D

Nice drill there.
You could probably do that even better with this little guy

I bought a Makita 18v li-ion drill and impact driver combo about two years ago. While they're super light weight, an impact driver isn't right for everything,(sure is freakin' sweet tho) and the drill just doesn't have the torque that my DeWalt had. Hence I kept the DeWalt around.
