I need a new EDC light!
on: August 24, 2011, 09:36:33 PM
I've been carrying my Rock River 2 AAA LED long enough! I bought it 4 years ago at Target for $10 and its beingwith me daily since. However I'm noticing the batteries aren't lasting as long and the switch is getting a little finicky. I put it out there to the experts; What should my next EDC light be? Here are my requests:

- Uses two AAA batteries
- Tail cap switch
- Bright, but not surface of the sun bright.

Thanks!

That or the 4sevens preon 2. There aren't many 2aaa lights out there.

very true.  You can also look at the Fenix LD05 and the Eagletac PN20a2.  I've not tried either one of these lights specifically, but have enjoyed other lights form both these companies.

You can get an EagleTac PN20a2 for about $40.  It's nice and bright and has a simple two level interface; you change levels by twisting the head and it has a tail-clicky on/off switch.  It also has a set of optional colored filters you can use for night vision purposes, and is available in a neutral tint.

It's not as bright as a Preon 2, but I think the filters and the neutral tint are more important than absolute brightness.  It also throws better than a Preon, and is less money.  It's not as sleek and professional looking as a Preon 2; it's sort of a 'tactic-cool' style, but that doesn't bug me.  I think it's a more versatile light than a Preon 2.

We still have one of those River Rock 2AAA flashlights -- dim and purple light.   Penlights have come a long way since the River Rock era.

I recommend the newest version of the Streamlight Stylus Pro.   It uses what Streamlight calls their "C4" LED and it is decently bright at 48 lumens.   Make sure you get the new C4 version and not the old version which is still being sold at various dealers.  (I bought the new version at BrightGuy.com )   The new version comes with a spare rubber pushbutton cover.

The new Stylus Pro is shown as the second light from the left in the photo below.

The old version Stylus Pro is shown above the new version in the photo below.

The New Stylus Pro with the improved switch is a nice unit . Streamlight stuff is usually pretty durable .

I had a 47 preon 2, it was pretty nice until I dropped it, then it developed loud buzzing and I had to return it. Can't say if it's typical quality or fluke.

I'm only guessing , but I had an earlier one that died after being dropped directly on it's tail cap . I'm guessing I wasn't the only one . Streamlight sells to lots of Cops and corrections types - their stuff gets a lot of impacts .

The new model has much more output , plus a revamped switch .

I just bought one of these and am very happy with it. It might be a bit bright for you.

Streamlight kit is pretty solid . Sometimes not cutting edge , but normally good gear . I have a 3 AAAA Stylus in my shirt pocket that goes back to at least 2002 , maybe earlier . Never skipped a beat .
