Sneak Peek ! New Multitasker Tools Series 2x
on: August 30, 2011, 07:54:26 AM
Found this pic in Multitasker Tools FB page and the first thing that came to my mind when i saw this jaws was a Tyrannosaur !! :o

Sad thing is that apparently the ball bearing pivot will no longer be present in future iterations of this great tool :(

More info from MTT FB page and link to full article:

As shown on AR15news.com we are changing our flagship Series2 Multitasker:

The current plier design is being replaced by an improved design with more aggressive teeth and better wire cutters, but the ball bearing pivot will not be carried over (too troublesome to mass produce) - we will be using a new hybrid bearing system instead, and switching to either PVD or Ti Nitride coating instead of the current Mellonite/Tufftride.

With the exception of the Brownells-branded model, the new Series2X will feature a removable Glock pin punch (CNC machined from non-marring AL-bronze) in place of the brass shanked dental pick.

More details and pix on the Series2X when we get closer to launch (end of October).

Hmmmm, at first glance:

:tu: Beefier plier jaws and pivot area
:tu: aggressive tooth section
:-\ Not sure what to think about that shorter/smaller wire cutter section..? Seems like a wire strand would tend to fall into that hole at either end

As regards the ball bearing...meh, I guess it's not a huge deal to me. It is a cool feature, but I'm not really sure how much "performance" value it adds :-\

The ball bearing pivot is not a clincher for me either.  I have owned several tools without it that have lasted years and years.  My old Snap on Duckbill pliers didn't have it, and they were older than me!  Snap on replaced them of course with an identical new pair.

My 13 year old Sideclip doesn't have ball bearings and it is perfectly functional, heck, probably even better than new because of the nice "worn in" movement in the pivot!

I think the Multitasker line is neat, but it certainly fits a niche that I am not currently a part of.  If I need to work on my guns I have my gun cleaning kit, which has a ton of dedicated tools in it.

I have to admit that a like the ball bearing not just because it gives the pliers a supersmooth operation but also for aesthetical reasons  :D

The ball bearing gives the Multitasker pliers a certain Wow factor that I am proud to show since i have been edcing it, specially at the construction work (a new datacenter the company is building)

BTW Mellonite has proved to be very resistant, but how tough is it compared to PVD or Ti Nitride coating ??

My only experience has been with titanium nitride, which is oftentimes these days applied to the cutting edges of saws, drill bits, end mills, etc in order to make the sharp edges hold up longer. If the stuff holds up on a drill bit drilling through metal, it sure as heck ought to hold up on a multitool. :salute:

I do like the way those jaw teeth mesh together like that. :) You never see that sort of quality from cast plier heads.

+1! :tu: As a matter of fact, the MTT EDC and its Emerson sibling are the only tools that may replace the Spirit and Charge in my EDC rotation. I only hope those tools are about the size of the Spirit... :-\
