A few comments & questions about the Surge.
on: December 28, 2007, 12:15:53 AM
So I've had a Surge for a little while now. :) I like the tool, and figured I'd add a few thoughts of my own about it.

Fit & Finish are not the same as my Charge... Lock up on all the tools is great, but there are things here and there that aren't "perfect". The main blade is a bit too loose for me. Also the "bolsters" at the end of the tool aren't perfectly squared up. Now I'm wondering how easy it would be to buy a security bit or two and fix these little issues... They seem much too picky to send out for warranty. ::) (Any advice on the torx drivers and using them would be appreciated)

The clip (from my Charge) works just fine, but its a bit wobbly, and doesn't look quite "at home" as it does on the Charge. Picky again... Also, I noticed that if I use the clip, the serrated blade becomes the first one I'd open when pulling it out of my pocket. This is an interesting difference from the Charge, but it doesn't bother me- actually I kinda like it.

I like the blade exchanger! I do wish that I could find more blades that fit in the tool closed... Has anyone cut blades down to size to make that happen?

Overall, the tools on here are awesome IMO. The big flat screwdriver and the awl are big, beefy, and great. The knives are long and good designs. The scissors are tough. I (although other might disagree) like the bit adapters, both the regular and the eyeglass (which I acutally find useful). The pliars are obviously winners as well. And the can/bottle opener... well, it the same as always.

I wanted to like my Surge but I found it too stiff and too sharp for me when I first got it and I never revisited it before losing it. When I reorder it I plan on getting the black oxide version since it might not be as sharp to the hand.

I assume you mean when the tool is closed (not using the pliers), and I noticed that too. Doesn't bother me too much though, but that of course would be personal preferences...

Does it have 6-point torx screws? If so, the bits are pretty easy to find. (My local hardware store has them as part of a little "kit" of security bits)
In order to be certain of having the right tool for every job.........one must first acquire a lot of tools
