DARN IT, DARN IT, DARN IT!!!
on: January 02, 2008, 02:02:43 AM
I am officially retiring my Leatherman Wave in favor of my Blast.  Once AGAIN today I got a blood blister..... TWO actually.  One from the plier handles meeting in the middle and pinching my thumb, and later when I was using the screwdriver, the lock failed, and itclosed on my thumb.  Not closed all the way, but it pinched me.  I love this tool, but the fact that it BITES like it does, and the fact that it's profile when clsoed is so friggin sharp makes it not as user friendly as my Blast.  My Wave has served it's purpose well for quite a few years, but now it is time for it to saunter into the next room and make way for it's cousin.

I agree, the wave series has the potential for a little hand damage where the two handles can pinch. I've felt it a few times... Out of curiosity, how'd the screwdriver fold on you? Did the lock fail, or did you accidentially press on the lock button (which can happen pretty easily...). Or was it an original Wave?

Either way, too bad you got bit... On the plus side, the blast ought to be pretty friendly. :)

I have never had a problem like that before... I can see it could happen but I have never experienced it...

Happened to me when I examined a Leatherman Wave in a store.  I lost all interest in buying a Wave after that.

I was really pushing down on it, and I guess I pressed on the locking mechanism, closing the driver.  Since the handles were closed, the driver didn't close completely, but enough to jam into my thumband friggin give me ANOTHER blood blister.  Good tool, but damn, too painful.  Blast for me from now on.

It's what turned me off to the Surge.  Same design, same problem.

I'm not understanding the unlocked-screwdriver-thumb-pinching thing. Don't the New Wave and the Blast have the same type of lock release?

Yes, J, they do.  I was not so much upset at the fact that it closed on me, as it was my own fault and I can live with that.  What vexed me was the fact that the driver bit adaptor has pointy and sharp edges, and when it folded on me, the corner of it stabbed me in the thumb, right under the nail, causing a blood blister.  Had this happened with the Blast, with it's longer drivers, it would have hit my thumb but not necessarily stabbed it.  Make sense?  I'm not mad about the tool failing (cause it didn't, I did).  I'm mad at the sharp edges all over the Wave.  Even when using the knife blades, you can't really apply too much pressure to a cut without the handles biting into your hands.  I guess it's an ergonomics thing.

Same here , a few years ago I went into a shop with the money in my pocket to buy a wave ( old type ) . I was really looking forward to it but when the shop keeper handed it to me I was so dissapointed , there was so much wobble and play in the handles and when you squeezed the handles hard I could see how you could pinch your skin  :(  I came out with a Supertool 200 .I think it was a much better tool .

Dunc, I agree with you 100% there.  The old wave was a huge disappointment for me. Having owned a PST for years and now owning a Supertool, the Wave's handles wobble and flex so much in comparison that I doubt I would ever chose the Wave over any of my other Leathermans.  Sure it has OHO blades but thats really it's only benefit compared to my others.

Oh, and while I am on a Wave rant, just how many flat heads does one tool need!?! ???

Ok rant over now.  :D
I'm back!!

Well, I personally love the old Wave. I loved the one hand opening and the diamond file. The old old waves had loose handles but LM made a new old Wave which had friction ramps underneth the pliers above the screwdrivers: so opening and closing was easy and the tool shuts with a snap.. I agree with you on the flat heads though. I would trade the middle sized one for an awl anyday. With an awl, locking blades, and scissors it would be the perfect tool- hell, the SURGE has all of those features!!!!!
