Bought A Surge
on: December 21, 2007, 01:55:43 AM
I was gonna hold out for a skeletool or even thought about getting a Byrdwrench but when I actually got my hands on a Surge I knew I wanted that one, the skeletool is cool looking but it didnt seem to have enough tools in it. I have always had a multitool but always something cheap I hardly ever used. Now I'm a PC tech and once I went to go buy a tool, after holding the wave and a few others, I realized I like a bigger tool, it feels like a real tool you can crank on and it just felt right, I've been carring it around with a flashlight on one side and the file/cell phone clipped to the other, it is kidna heavy, and I dont like tight belts (wierd? who knows) so it takes getting used to but the tool itself so far really does kick a!

One thing I was wondering about and think they should do is make more items to put in the changable file/saw area, hell I think it would be sweet, even a third party company could make some stuff, there is possibility there that seems wasted unlss I'm not looking in the right spot.

Also would you guys suggest I buy a bit kit or the universal big one that accepts regular bits AND does the big one have a rachet or is it all manual?

Thanks guys!

Congratulations on the Surge- it's a great heavy duty tool with lots of fans out there.  I'd suggest getting a standard bit kit and ratcheting screwdrivers or the Leatherman Universal Tool Adapter as you are limited to flattened bits using just the one built into the Surge.  They work well enough but can be too stubby for tight places like the insides of computer hardware.

You can also get different kinds of tools for the file/saw adapter at the local hardware store.  Look for regular T shanked saw blades.

Welcome to the forum!

The SURGE is a phenomenal tool... If you haven't heard I lost two SURGE's in two days! A generous member is giving me one! Thanks again Spoon! I EDC a SURGE and I have used it for everything imaginable. I have even used it as a weight to throw the end of rope over a 40 foot tree branch, or even the time when I had to cut fencing to save a vicious dog! The SURGE is my favorite tool on the market. It suits me.. Fits my gorilla hands perfect: everytool on it I have used at least numerous times I mean come-on who used the hook found on the spirit or various other SAK's, and lastly the one handed blades.. That is important to me. If I were you I would get both! I would get the Bit Kit first and in your job you need to get in tight spaces or get at recessed screws then buy the extender because you could even use extra long hex bits with the extender!

BTW, what kind of flashlight is in it and how is a cell phone clipped to the other side? And what type of sheath do you have leather or nylon? Thanks

Haha Def- Warning - while you were typing a new reply has been posted. You may wish to review your post... Hate it when that happens! But yeah the T- shank blades are a dream I like the wood saw ones because of how well they work! Good choice on a tool!

Deosn't the bit extender make the tool adapter moot? as it can take regular bits too?

Anyway, the tool adapter and maybe the bit extender are exellent choices, as is the leatherman bit kit. I'd go either of those, and carry 3 or 4 bits that you use most often for opening and working on PC's. For me, it's T5, T8, T10, T15 and T20 Hex bits to work on HP/Compaq/Digital machines, with a leatherman tool adapter (bit extender is hopefully on order). I also have the leatherman bit kit, which is good for a basic variety of bits, but the smallest hex bit that it has is a T10 - no too much of a problem as I mostly use T15, but still, if it's a case of either/or, you may want to make sure the size bits that you will need to use are in the bit kit before you decide that way.

Sort of, but not quite.  I'd feel much more confident twisting a very tough screw with the UTA than the bit extender.

Ahh OK. The only time I can think of when you get those kind of screws is if you're building a rack enclosure and installing rack-mounted gear like switches or rack-mounted servers. IMO for that you're better off getting a ratcheter or better yet an electric screwdriver. That way you can support the item you're intalling with one hand an screwdrive with the other, but that's just my personal preference :)

BTW to the OP: neither the tool adadpter or bit extender are ratcheters.

I don't get the Surge.

What's wrong with a Wave?

It might be fine enough for de-evolution men like 123 with their hairy knuckles and yellow fingernails, but for us regular chaps the Surge, and I suppose the Core are a wee bit hefty.

If I wanted pliers like that I'd just carry some decent Linies.

I don't think it's as much to do with the user (or their size), but what the user intends on doing with the tool.

Haha. The reason I carry a SURGE is because: it has oho blades, big blades, swappable file and saw ( I use the diamond files a lot), accepts T-Shank blades aka Bosch blades, nice big awl, stranded wirecutter, huge scissors, and I really like the bit driver- because I could have 42 screwdrivers in a pouch!

I guess you need all those BIG things because you are (and I quote) "a de-evolution man with hairy knuckles and yellow fingernails"!! :D

This Surge you speak of sounds real nice. Does it come in more than one version like the Charge, and if it does which one do you recommend?

i stopped by Gander Mountain on the way home from work today and guess what I found? You got it baby, a SURGE!! Man, that thing is BIG! I love the interchangeable saw/file. It came with the nylon sheath but I see you can get both the leather or nylon sheaths directly from Leatherman for only $6 each. They also have replacement saw/file sets w/pouch for only $5! I can't wait to play with this monster. :ahhh

So I've had my surge for a little while and wow, I use it pretty much everyday now. The first thing that happened almost immediately after I bought it was my dishwasher breaking, I took it all apart and found the pump was broken, bought a new one and installed it etc all with the surge, then just this weekend I installed all new light fixtures in my house, and 3 ceiling fans, even needed to out holes in the ceiling and did it all with the surge, its an awesome tool.
