Open Source CAD file for sharing Designs
on: September 18, 2011, 04:31:01 PM
Hello All,
As we're all aware this is a very useful and helpful forum, full of people willing to share ideas and increase group knowledge. Thats why we're here and thats why we stay here.

One problem with all this is that communicating infomation can be abit fraught, with misunderstandings inevitable and asking specific people to share infomation can appear rude.

I propose, as the title suggests, a pass around and free to edit (open source) CAD file that could in time come to contain large amounts of relevent and useful design data, contributed by many forum members to aid understanding of varies projects and help others plan new ones.

I have created a draft of how i assume such a file would look, which is available to download from my web page:

tofty.co.uk

(the page is a very basic place holder and will be smartened up soon)

The dwg. file contains drawings of some of my recent projects (damascus charge, titanium & brass pen), some future projects and a few things i drew up just for fun.

Let me know what you think.

(There are many free CAD viewer programs available online if your not a CAD user)

That's a very good idea. But, if I may, it needs to be password locked. For reasons that I will not go into here that would be best. The password could be given out to members upon asking. If you need to know more just pm me and I'll be happy to explain why. :salute:
If I remember correctly, wait, what was I saying?

Thanks Tattoo,
This document being open to the public stops any one party taking exclusive benefit, ironically the further distributed this file becomes the safer from abuse its contents becomes.

does nobody else feel that this has potential?

One other benefit would be an aid to SAK modification.
I suspect that accurate drawings of varies componants and patterns have been created by a selection of our most active members. Having them all in one place may well help newer members in planning and executing their own modifications.
Basicly forming a catalog of components.

Perhaps a tutorial thread might be whats required,
i'd assumed more people were accustomed to using CAD programs.
