Made In U.S. Or Not?
on: September 19, 2011, 07:58:33 PM
Saw on Cabela's web site that the Sidekick and Wingman are backorderable, showing 4-5 weeks. What seemed strange: the Wingman is $29.99, and shows made in the USA. The Sidekick is $39.99, and shows to be imported. Video I've seen says they're both US made. Is that a misprint on Cabela's site, or did I miss something?

It would seem very odd if these two were made in different places, so I'd say it's a misprint.  :)
Be excellent to each other and always know where your towel is.

They are both US made, in the same factory that they make all the other tools in their lineup.  They just have a lower fit and finish level that accounts for their lower price.

Yes, but that covers all Leatherman models. These are no different.

Actually, the fit and finish is excellent in my opinion.

From what I call, there are subtle differences between these and the higher-cost tools - shorter knife, thinner blade, simpler wire-cutting design, passive tool locks (slip joint), no labeling on plier head, very slightly thinner outer scale steel, and small pivot bearings/washers for the handles and main tools.

It would seem very odd if these two were made in different places, so I'd say it's a misprint.  :)
Definitely made in USA. I don't know of foreign materials were used in the tools, but I haven't seen any mention of this. The boxes say nothing except for "Oregon Proud, Portland Oregon."

Hi,

Leatherman has posted several times that the Sidekick and the Wingman are USA products.  I received two Sidekicks today - really nifty engineering in them.  Looking forward to a Wingman arriving on Wednesday.

Best - Joe

That wire cutter may turn me off completely.  I hate that design.  Say you cut a wire that is harder than you intended, there is no way to recover from the dent it's going to make.  The could have put a Kick plier head on these and they would have been better.  I know they are spring loaded but jeez, at what price?
