Pictures of the most badly damaged area of Manila, the Roxas Boulevard.

This is Roxas Boulevard  before the typhoon.

The US Embassy on Roxas Blvd. appeared to TV news. It looks like it had merged with Manila Bay Tuesday morning. Floodwaters had risen halfway up its front gate, perhaps four feet, by midmorning. Much of Roxas Boulevard was similarly submerged, as well as United Nations Avenue and other areas adjacent to the bay.

A storm surge in the bay caused by Typhoon Pedring's ferociously strong winds, and not simply rainwater, could have produced the flood.

The lobby of all hotels and almost all business establlishments along the boulevard were flooded up the waist level.  What worsened the flooding is the high tide that coinsided at the height of the typhoon.

After the typhoon.

Every year we get hurricane and tropical storms through late August and early September and rather than hunker down, everyone flocks to the beaches to see the giant waves.  It is kind of neat to see, but some morons go to places where the rocks are large and dangerous and get washed out to sea.  While I personally consider it a form of natural selection, it's usually a rescue worker that gets hurt or killed trying to save their dumb asses.

Smurfin idiots.  People don't think that when they get themselves into sticky situations, someone could get hurt or killed trying to help them.  Really bothers me.  What's worse is how the people around here where I live are oblivious to the efforts of emergency personnel.  They ignore them until something goes wrong, then criticize them for not getting to the scene soon enough.

Glad to see you phillipino fellas are ok!
