clever,clever leatherman
on: September 30, 2011, 10:40:45 PM
I'll post pics on this tomorrow morning i promise.i use my phone camera and i need natural daylight for the best quality.

Anyone with the sidekick and wingman, remove the pocket clip.theres a hex nut under the torx nut so the tool wont split and you are left with a very clever bit wrench.

Very very tasty indeed.i was pleasantly suprised.a whole other tool in a tool.it fits hex bits spot on.

Is there no end to what LM come up with.

Pics tomorrow morn.

In order to be certain of having the right tool for every job.........one must first acquire a lot of tools

So, the clip is a wrench?

Will it hold up to any torque though?

Once the clip is removed would you suggest putting the torque screw back in or leaving it out ?

That is pretty dang neat. How well does the "wrench" retain bits? I have a ratcheting offset bit driver, but it takes specialized bits with a ball detent. I would love a magnetized alternative that takes standard bits.

I'd leave it out dunc.i'd be afraid of losing it.any fluff that gets into the threaded bolt can easily be fished out with a toothpick.

I doubt very much this clip could be used as a wrench to do any tough jobs.its just handy that it does fit common bits.

So as I see it, all you need to do is take a Torx bit, place it in a bit driver, unscrew the fastener that is retaining the clip, remove the clip, take the Torx bit out of your bit driver, and then you can use the clip that you just removed with your bit driver as a bit driver.

Is it just me, or...

I'm right with you Paul, it's very interesting that there is a hex on the pocket clip but...how would you be able to utilize this "feature" without taking the tool apart with another tool.

The hex is similar in design to the kick wrench I mean pocket clip that has the fine spline in the end of the pocket clip that coincidentally can be used to remove the PST style fasteners.  Using a hex is easier to produce and unfortunately can not be used to tighten up your PST style fasteners.

I actually think its intended as an added measure to avoid clip movement. The hex shape prevents any side to side. That and the little tab really make it solid without over tightening the screw. The convenient size of the hex opening fits the standard nut without a special manufacturing step. All that said, one cant discount the obvious double use. Imho.

Or you can find a thumbscrew to replace the torx screw.

Again, i think leatherman found a clever way to make a cheap very solid clip without movement. I doubt the wrench idea was the main concern.

Looks quite ingenious, but I hope the clip is more secure than the one for the kick
