Ya Just Got to Love Leatherman
on: October 08, 2011, 03:53:56 PM
Back in August, a missionary in the African Congo posted a photo on FB of a doctor removing a child's cast. He was using a Super Tool 200 that the doctors pass around for different uses, especially the saw for cast removal. There was mention of how they like the Leatherman over having to worry about keeping possession of a bunch of different medical tools, and the versatility of the thing. Basically all the same reasons we love Leatherman's.

August photo:

Well, when Juli, and the rest of the folks at Leatherman got wind of it they set out to send them some more. So through a service agency to the area (it would seem that items directly shipped to the Congo rarely ever get to the intended recipients), they were able to send them several ST300's. Apparently they asked for the ST300 because it has so many tools in one, and the saw (they said) was "the best one they had found for this work."

Yesterday:

I think I'm going to order another new Leatherman today... :salute:

I think if you search around you will find that all the major manufacturers have done something similar.  Not to say that it isn't great that they are doing that mind you, but bear in mind this kind of thing is something that happens a fair bit.

True, very true. But there is the fact that Leatherman has consistently shown that they run their company this way. And while, like any for-profit company, they are there to make money, they seem to take a special pride in community, and world-wide charitable involvement.

Not taking anything away from the act itself, but this is called PR and what we are doing right now is exactly its purpose

What can I say, if I see a company doing the "right thing", that's where I spend my money

+1. I'll do the same. Although I don't see any other companies giving factory tours with pres and then signing multis :)
If I remember correctly, wait, what was I saying?

No matter the reason, shipping a bunch of free tools halfway across the world at your expense is, well, expensive.  Hats off to LM for providing a tool they can ACTUALLY use versus something that comes stock with a 2D screwdriver and a 1.5 inch saw.

That's one thing about Leatherman, they make tools that actually function in a last resort scenario, and giving that model away to someone in need is indeed a noble act.

This, among other things, is one of the reasons I get really angry at Shane on the Multitasker Facebook page, and why I'll probably never buy one of their products.

Leatherman gives back to the community at large, and to the world community.  Their PR team is constantly engaged with fans and they go out of their way to donate to charities all over the world.  They're also extremely active in the Portland area, donating time, tools, and dollars.  They're accessible and they don't talk **** about their competitors.

Rant time.  Every time I hear the Multitasker crew bad mouth Leatherman, I get furious.  Leatherman:

-Invented the plier-based multi.
-Invented OHO blades on a multi.
-Were the first to add bit drivers, both proprietary and hex (the Crunch).
-Ship new products every year.
-Shoot for wide appeal.
-Keep jobs in America.
-Give a LOT back to the community.

When competitors talk **** about them, I wish they'd remember the above.  LTG is a class act, and I'm proud to spend my $$$ with them.

Agreed.  The fact is, Leatherman DID send the tools.  PR? Sure, but it also reflects their philosophy in general:  Their warranty policy, community service, commitment to high quality and continual improvement.

It is just another facet of their corporate environment.

Well done Leatherman. :)

I totally agree.  When a niche market company talks smack about a successful general(ish) product producer, it reeks of poor taste.  Multitasker makes some cool stuff and I would absolutely buy an EDC version of their tools, but no matter what plier based multi is on my belt I'm always reaching for my LEATHERMAN.  (It just happens to always actually be a Leatherman but that's beside the point.)

Im not even sure what Multitasker is, but I have a lot of trouble calling other brand multitools Leathermans. Leatherman is the original, im not used to using the brand as a general name for a type of tool. Just seems wrong. I dont have any problem with other brands, however. I think we're off topic anyway. Any company, leatherman in this case, deserves kudos for charity and humanitarian stuff. Unless their tools break apart in their hands and hurt someone. But that wouldnt be a real Leatherman

I dont normally post on here, but i take exception to your statement.

While I may criticize their DESIGNS for being conservative, I have never, ever, taken shots at the company or their staff. Get your facts straight.

Buck has also been very generous to missionaries . One dude got a bunch of factory seconds , that became very valuable trading stock indeed .

Props to all who help out in this way .
