Looks like collecting Leatherman MTs just got a lot more expensive.

There was an interesting tool that one of the forum members told me about. It was a Leatherman Wave with interesting 25th Anniversary handles. I was curious at this piece, so I emailed Juli over at Leatherman. She told me she was sure it was a polishing or striking test piece that escaped the factory. Nothing illegal, as there were a few roaming around to various employees as test mules.

Well, I placed a 300 dollar bid on it. It sold for 405 with 3 higher bids than mine. A few years ago, I would have easily gotten this piece. This tells me that more and more people are now collecting multi-tools. Also, a good indicator of the MT side of things now starting to become an investment. The SAKs were always an investment in that regard, but the MTs were always lukewarm and tepid. Times are a changing.  :D

Anyone else find it funny that, despite the sell price, the seller still charged for shopping?

Not really. The postage looks to be a sensible price and bidding started at $0.99

I'm not taking any more mod orders at present, sorry.

Sadly, we are to blame for this phenomenon.

The more we make it possible for collectors to communicate and share info, the more people will be encouraged to collect.  The more people that collect, the more "normal" it seems to collect them, and the more people that are collecting, the higher prices go.

When I started Multitool.org I had about 25 tools and I thought I was the only one out there, at least other than this guy who kept posting on BF and my good friend Dave Bowen.  I soon found out that there were some other hardcore collectors, but they were few and far between, and for several months this forum consisted of me, a couple of serious collectors and a bunch of my friends who posted here just to help me get started.  Gradually more and more folks started hanging out here until the forum hit critical mass, started showing up on Google searches and the rest is history.  I would say that many of the collectors here got started collecting largely because of this forum, and I don't think that's me being conceited.  Several months after we started this forum a multitool forum started at KF as well, so there was obviously some interest out there, and we just gave it a method of focusing itself.

I knew it wasn't my fault :D

But truthfully, when I found MT.O I was at a point where I wanted to move from knife collection to MT collecting, but I wanted a community to enjoy the hobby with.

That is not to say that MT.O hasn't added "fuel to the fire". But with the great members and management here, it's a nice warm fire, the kind that reaches into your bones and soothes your soul. :tu:

I'm glad I found this place, its awesome! I had joined KF but the MT section was days in between posts, and thats just not for me. I'll carry a multi tool over and over before I carry a plain folder knife. Thats just me. Great thing you have going here!

I blame this danged place! >:(

I was just trying to see if the *new* Skeletool would be a good Christmas present (I had one and loved it, but wanted to make sure it didn't have problems).

I found MT.O and read the info about all the different MT's I had used over time.  Stunned, I went to the forum, then I went insane, and now have drawers of SAKs, MT's and One piece tools  :ahhh.  Even have a 1/2 dozen flashlights now too...

However, that said, about 90% of my online time is spent here... :drink:

It looks like your tool-to-carry balance may be off a little. You need to spend some time in the "Non-Tool" area, and get stocked up there  :D

More than anything I wanted to know the date code on the tool!  It also looks like a very easy tool to duplicate with an engraver...just get the art and a Wave with the proper date code....

The prototypes and one offs are great but unless it can be proven where it came from and why it was made there is not much difference between the $ 405 Wave and a modded tool...at least that is my 2 cents worth.

I had a multitool collection before I found this site, but it expanded greatly once I started haunting these forums.

I had always picked up the occasional tool on sale or clearance, but I suddenly had people to share my purchases with, so I went overboard for a while. I still got bargains on the ones I bought, but I was certainly buying more than I was going to need.

I've eased off a bit for the time being, but I still like logging in to see others' new purchases.

Wow sorry you got out bid on the wave Chako. Would have been a nice addition to the collection.  :(

In pertaining to what Def said I completely agree. I always loved MT's and had a few here and there but had been a knife collector since I was a small child. Once I found MT.org I caught the bug and honestly have no idea how many MT's I have now. I need to take a head count after all the new tools get here. Thanks Def for the great site.   :salute:

I already had a collection going...but I quickly found this web site once I wanted to know the story behind the various tools I had and inherited.

Yes, well, I guess my plastering these forums with photos over the last couple of years hasn't helping any either.

I am happy that MT collecting is getting up there, even though I lost this piece. It sort of a validation for me.  :D

I love this forum/site. I came across it by accident, cant remember exactly how. I was over the moon to find there were so many people like me who are interested in similar stuff. By that I mean buying, using, talking about all this stuff....not just collecting it. there are folks out there who actively search out the "next big thing" to invest in, for future profits, to them its a comodity....be it super cars, gold, shares etc. The "buy now, store away for later" (profit) syndrome. The biggest tools I know of.....are them  We are a society of like minded folk, they are purly bussiness people out for a future profit, off the backs of us if we're not careful.
It seemed like a good idea at the time.

I love this forum, too. This and EDC forum are my two most visited sites, with BF a fairly close second.

I've always loved pocket knives, but was a one every three or four years until October 2007. I don't know what happened, but I got bit with the knife, SAK, and MT bug badly. Actually, I know what happened: I was looking for a new knife, as my previous one, a CRKT M16, was several years old and showing it's age. My brother had found a Spyderco Scorpius and I liked the look. I went looking for Spyderco reviews, found BF, picked up a stainless Dragonfly and a Charge TTi (cuz I also wanted a Leatherman, didn't know about any other brands at the time), and the rest is history. I eventually found KF and SOSAK (thanks Def, my wallet will never be the same), was linked to MTo, and eventually found EDCF. Registered with CPF and USN, but never post.

As loathe as I am to consider myself a collector, that is exactly what I am. I have around 40 knives and SAKs, and 15 or 20 MTs, but honestly carry and use a sparse few. Most all are resting in a .50 cal ammo box in the garage, as part of an experiment to see if I can make it through the end of the year with only a Style CS and a Buck 309. So far so good, no shakes yet. Not to derail the thread, but I am glad MT is picking up. Also glad most all are production models from larger companies so we generally don't have to worry about MTs going the path of the Atwood.

I found this site completely by accident. I was looking to see what SAK was issued to go with my Schmidt-Rubin rifle, and was fooling around online. Before that I'd had a Tinker in my pocket for years, and my only MT was a Blast. That search found me SOSAK, and from there I ended up browsing this site. Looking for that one knife has turned into about 15 different SAKs, my Blast has pupped and turned into 6 other LMs, and a number of Gerbers and some other assorted shiny pointy things have ended up in my possession. But I swear, I don't collect anything.........
There's no such thing as "Too pretty to carry".  There's only "Too pretty NOT to carry"...... >:D
