Help me with this:
on: November 04, 2011, 09:17:21 PM
I really do love the feel of my quality dedicated folders, yet I seldom carry them.  I almost always have either my Leatherman Charge or Wenger Mike Horn Ranger, because I use pliers all the time around the farm.

With that said, I seem to use the blades on these MT's almost always and can't say I've had too many instances where they came up short.

Because of this, I seem to rarely carry a dedicated folder anymore. :ahhh  Those of you who carry a folder, do you carry a MT as well?  If not, how do you work around the pliers functionality?

I'm seriously looking for an option that adds a folder, but not just for pocket decoration.

Generally a knife feels better in hand for me. Less slippery, takes up less space, quicker access, open/close easier, lighter, easier to clean if get dirty etc. But I don't use pliers much and often will go with just a key chain sized, so my situation is different than yours.

I've toyed with the idea of a small Vise Grips along with a folder.  I might try that this weekend.  Like you, I think a dedicated folder has a better feel, but since my MT is in my front pocket for easiest access, I tend to use those blades.  If I had a Vise Grip in a back pocket, a Spyderco (for example) would go into the "prime" spot.

I also keep my phone (which is getting bigger and bigger, current one is 2.8" by 5" with case on)in right front pocket though so a MT doesn't always fit.

I hear you about phone size.  After cracking a screen with pocket carry, I keep my phone in a belt sheath now.

....well I carry a Micra so no pliers.
I also allways have a medium size knife, slipjoint or locking folder, on me which I use for cutting since the Micra blade is quite small.
When, however, I carry a pliers tool it is the juice S2, whose knife I will actually use, so usually if I carry that I do not carry another knife with me.

Byrd Wings Slipit - right front pocket. That's pretty much how things have been for a while now, but I do carry other knives from time to time. This leaves a pocketable multi in the same pocket (spirit, MP 700, Juice, micro tool tin or similar). Torch in left front pocket

If it's a clipped MT that goes in right front pocket with a loose slipjoint/SAK in same pocket or SAK on suspension clip with torch in left front pocket

Occasionally small MT (juice/SAK) goes on suspension clip with torch in left front pocket, and just the slippie in the right front.

If I'm cutting something I'll use a knife - for everything else it's the multi or SAK. MT blades (other than SAK) are back up only or just used occasionally as a change so it doesn't feel neglected  ;) It's very rare I don't have a small simple folder on me, I'd rather wear that out first rather than a MT. If I haven't got a multitool on me I feel unprepared. If I haven't got a knife and a torch I feel naked. I've usually got my EDC bag close by though which has some goodies in to stop me feeling any discomfort  :D

Perhaps it because I almost always carry my MT in a belt pouch but I do find a separate folder in my pocket just that bit more convenient to grab and use quickly.  Doesn't have to be a OHO either, a traditional folder or a SAK does me just fine.

I carry a multi in a belt sheath, and a folder in the right front pocket. I like having the larger blade, plus its easier to open and close. I mostly carry the multi for the pliers and bit driver, though I tend to use the file and saw every once in a while. My light and pen also ride in the MT sheath.

I carry my Pioneer in my watch-pocket.  That frees up space on my belt for whatever multitool/sak I happen to need.  Another option is the double mag sheath which will hold 2 items.  It's a bit wide but a good option for keeping your stuff together.

For anything more than brief usage, I like a separate folder. My go to workhorse being a UKPK, and several others for other occasions.

I often carry a Knifeless Fuse, so there's no redundancy there anyway :)

I find dedicated knives more comfortable than MTs.

Nate, are you a creature of habit? Do you always carry the Charge and Wenger in the same place? If so, just go a week with the knife in that place and carry the MT's somewhere else. that way you will automatically reach for where the MT was and grab the knife. After a week or so you'll be back in the habit and you can tweak your carry locations to what suits you best.

This is a significant part of it, I think.  I carry my Charge in my favored pocket.  Maybe I'll try putting it in a less accessible pocket and see if that changes my feelings about a folder.

My pattern of carrying a dedicated folder varies. If I'm carrying my Blast, Kick, MP450 and such, they go in their sheaths on my left side, about 7-8 o'clock. I keep a folder clipped to my left front pocket, and a SAK in my right pocket. If I'm carrying my Wingman or Octane, that gets clipped to my left pocket, and the folder stays home. The one constant in my carry is a SAK, and even then the model varies often. Just a folder and a SAK sees a fair bit of time as well. I'm constantly messing around with my combos.

I carry a folder RF and a MT on the belt or clipped in the RR. No matter what or how I carry the folder is RF and all other knives or tools find another place to ride along.
What? Enablers! Are you serrrrious? Where? I dont see any.

In the office I try to stick to 1 tool, that usually being a Wave with a Style CS in my pocket. However, when outdoors, ranching, etc...I prefer a multi on my belt and a good folder in my pocket, just for ease of access, and options.
