Not Just Old, but Prehistoric
on: December 07, 2011, 02:33:40 AM
What I surprise I got when I came across this one!

This is a new 74mm Executive Luxury model just introduced by Victorinox.  I never expected them to introduce another luxury edition knife on the 74mm line.  These knives feature handles made from prehistoric Mammoth Tusk thus making every example unique.  This is a clever ploy to get one to buy several of them.

These knives seem to only be available only in the US right now, but there is always ebay.

Are these not great?  OK the price is a little great too, but I'm so happy that Victorinox even released such a knife.  It seems like something that just would not be expected at this time.

That's nice, especially since it's in the otherwise dead 74mm line. o.o

How much did they run?

I had this one on my watch list: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250934521153

Note: import/export of these materials may be illegal to/from your country. So be careful if you want to order one from overseas.

really? I thought that as it's mammoth ivory it's not subject to any restrictions like elephant ivory would be.

That's right, mammoth ivory is not subject to any CITES control because we wiped them all out at the end of the last ice age  ;) But you may still find an over-zealous customs inspector who detains it because it looks like elephant ivory. Mammoth ivory is freely traded as a regulation-free ivory 'substitute' in guitar building

You guys are correct. However, it's against eBay policy to sell any product made of or containing ivory (any kind!), on European eBay sites, according to this: http://pages.ebay.nl/help/policies/wildlife.html

Obviously, this does NOT apply to the eBay listing I linked to.

Very nice

Man that's a nice one!!  With each one being so different these are really great personal EDC knives.  The ivory has a softer warmer feel than the buffalo horn; these feel fantastic, they may be the best 74mm yet.

Completely agree!  The feel is amazing-even primal.  I now understand why the Mammoths went extinct.  Once the next door caveman got to handle your Mammoth tusk tools, he HAD to have them also.  :D

(BTW, this one is EDC when I'm going to work--ie no farm EDC :ahhh).

Looks like it so far, I have not seen them any where else.  They just showed up though at the end of November so they might be coming to other markets at some point.  SAKWiki has quite a few pictures in the 74mm gallery of different samples thanks to a reseller who had a bunch.
