Let me hear some love for the CE
on: December 09, 2011, 06:10:10 AM
I don't really know any lore behind the combo edge but I love them. Ideally I carry one of each but if I only have one blade I always choose one with some serrations. I have nightmares about being stuck with only a plain edge and staring at a knotted price of frozen rope. Honestly I don't understand when some serrations would actually impede a blade. Tell me I'm not alone!

Gday Beerplumber i like serrations on the front half of the blade, i hate them on the back half of the blade. I want to get a Vic SAK with front serrations.

I MUCH prefer a CE over a PE.  I always find myself using the serrated portion of the blade for something.

Haha, that's a true Canadian nightmare there!

Pete I feel the same way but seems hard to find. The only thing that comes close that I've found is my Vic spirit butter knife. Have you found anything else that fits the bill?

Check out the OHO Trekker.  It has serrations from the tip to mid way down the blade and plain edge the rest of the way to the back.   The Vic serrations work well for pretty much any kind of cutting and the plain edge near the handle let you do controlled carving.  It's a very nice system overall.

Well Beerplumber, you have three people agreeing with you so far, that's three more than I thought you would get.

If I was forced to carry a CE (Cursed Edge) blade it would be on like Brutus pointed out in his reply.  That one actually looks tolerable. Make sure there is a bottle opener on the MT along with the CE and it will be even more tolerable.

CE blade :ahhh: NO thanks! I'd rather have CE over SE but PE is my favorite. Did you get all of that? :pok: :pok: :D

I don't really mind the Combo edge blades so much except for when it's time for
sharpening them.  I find I put in double the work and have to think about what
I'm doing. :-\

Full plain or full serrated.  Dislike combo edges.

I have seen alot of people get hurt, because of back half serrations. Since i banned their use on my courses, i have not had to duck tape any knife wounds  :tu:

Hi Sean well this is going to sound crazy, and the reason why it sounds crazy, is because it is. But here goes. People buy a new {maybe one of their first knifes} and then come on one of my courses. On the course they don't use the knife because they don't need to {scissors to open lunch maybe}. Anyway what happens is they want to use their knife, so i would say to them {back at the car park} carve a tent peg, because they couldnt use the back half of the blade, the point would slip off the wood, and into their hand or leg. Then i would explain to them, that's why i didn't want them to use a knife in the first place.

I am a fan of the combo edge. I would prefer a blade of each, but more often than not, I will choose the CE. Ranching will make a person love having some serrations with them all the time.

Someone has to start right at the basics of good knife safety with most new users. :)

Ideally a knife with 2 blades one of each.  I cant stand combo blades.   They are awful for novice users as well, ever seen an amateur knife handler cut up his hand with those jagged serrations? Its nasty.  PE wounds from a sharp blade heal nice...  PE all the way for me, as long as its sharp, it will cut through anything you need it to.

I suppose I can understand putting serrations at the blade tip.. no cutting power there anyway.  But at the base of the knife near the handle? That's just daft for a carving type or bushcrafting knife.  My alox farmers have a wonderful plain edge, and also have a wicked sharp fully serrated blade, its called a wood saw! :D

You can say that again. The 3 main problems i have with students are.[1] Fire starting they want to learn friction fire starting. I explain to them that they run the risk of hurting themselfs carveing the parts, and its just plain stupid, when you can just pull out a bic, and in 0.5 seconds you got fire.[2] They just have to use their knife to carve something, but their knifes have serrations.[3] they think their compass is playing up so they take guess which way North is and then split the diffrance just to be on the safe side .

Another thing that Vic got right: if absolutely necessary to put serrations on a blade, do it at the tip _only_.
